My wife & I are changing our Passat estate probably for one of the above and we wondered what mpg people are getting solo from a manual version. Also any experiences of either would be useful.

I have the Terracan after speaking to a neighbour who uses his for his business. Its a brilliant towcar for the money, with loads of pull especially when loaded with all the gear. Loads of room in the rear and head room etc. I get mid 30's re fuel.

We have towed with it once to Devon and back but didnt really watch the fuel gauge plus it ts still only done 6,000 so not really run in yet.

I considered Honda, and the others but thought was it worth paying the extra 5 to 6 grand to do the same job when this works and feels better. If you are near to Stafford i bought mine from the dealer there, who gave me an excellent deal that i couldnt refuse it was well worth the 50 miles i travelled to sign up.

Hope this is of help, there was another viewer asking the same question a few days ago which might be worth a look at.

Thanks very much for that it is a lot better getting the truth from people who actually run the cars than relying on the official figures. I guess that is around the same as a Sorento - not too bothered about the towing mpg as I assume it will be around the 24/25 mpg mark, the same as our Passat does towing our big fat Burstner!

Hi Guy. We looked at the Terracan when we were hunting for a large 4x4. It is a lot of 4x4 for your money and the warranty is an obvious attraction. It reminded me of the Discovery, one which Landrover could have made between the current model and the last. It offers outstanding towing capabilities, but it's not the car we chose. For a long time I have championed the Sorento, even now, when we don't have one, I still feel it can't be beaten as a package. A smoother, quieter engine and apparently excellent auto (we had a manual) are just the starting points. Very comfortable to drive, the seats are very relaxing to sit in for hours and the controls work as you would expect them to. The base model has plenty of kit and is exceptional value, the XS and above has all you will need. Not for nothing has it won all the awards and the only way I could describe the decision we made is; If we had bought the Terracan, I would have always wondered what it would have been like to have gone for the Sorento. Having had the Sorento, I never wondered what ownership of the Terracan would be like.

As for fuel consumption, you should be looking at the low 30s on average, some will say higher and some will get lower figures, but as an average low 30s is just about correct.

It's a Rosy picture so far for the Sorento, but it isn't perfect. Soft metallics means that the paint scratches easily if abused. Handling while firm and predictable is old school 4x4, don't expect to out corner an X5. Resale values are patchy, but as you don't have to spend a huge amount in the first place, it's less of a concern.

Let me finish by saying you will be quite happy with either of these cars, so get a good test drive in both, to be sure which one you prefer.

The Kia Sorrento is a relatively modern design with Porsche contributing to the suspension and I believe an Isuzu based engine. The Hyundai Terracan is a worked over old style Shogun.

I personally found the Sorrento a much nicer vehicle but it lacked a bit of grunt when towing my unladen Elddis Crusader Superstorm. The new Sorrento should address this problem though as it has more power.

Regards

Steve

Hi,

I have an 04 Sorento which we use to tow a 1400kg Bailey. The Sorento is 5 speed auto and I get 30-32mpg solo on mixed M and A raods, and 22-24 mpg towing. It is just coming up to three yaers old and has been trouble free so far, and service costs at the Kia main dealer are reasonable.
