But beware, with the new on-line MOT, all the details including the emissions for your car will be on the DVLA database.

Just give it time!

Darren, does that mean any car built before 2000, doesn't get clobbered with the new CO2 output surcharge? I haven't seen any detail on the news yet, as I've been too busy working to pay GB's excessive taxes! If so, thank goodness as we've just bought a great tow car, but it's a real gas guzzler doing just 17 mpg when towing - ouch! It's a 1998 210 BHP 3.0 V6 Auto 406 Estate. Fortunately, when it's not towing it's only used for about 20 miles a week, as even solo we're lucky to achieve 30mpg. Let's hope GB doesn't catch onto the fact that even moderately economical cars push out tons of CO2 when towing, otherwisw he'll tax us even more - ssshhhhh!

Very well said Paul - when he failed to get trust law overturned he introduces POAT (Pre Owned Asset Tax) and now he changes the rules on Trusts that, as you say, gave middle Britain the chance to protect the hard earnt family wealth.

It also works the other way. My car is low emissions but because it was registered before 2001 I have to pay the standard road tax of

it has been said any times that car tax should be scrapped and put onto petrol tax, that way if you own a 6l car and only drive 100 miles a year then you pay tax on that, if you own a 1l car and drive 50k a year you also pay.

Many old people own cars that they do not use often and have to pay the same tax as a person who uses their car for business every day of the year.

I'm with Steve on this one, not only for the reasons he states, but also because it would at least go some way to making the not inconsiderable number of car owners who don't bother to tax their vehicles pay their fair share. Not that I think that all of them would pay for their fuel either, but some of them would!

It is an obvious answer to put the road tax onto the cost of the fuel as stated. However this topic has been discussed over many years by the powers that be but they have always come up with some feable excuse. There would still be the need to register the ownership of the vehicle at DVLA in Swansea but instead of the roud fund disc a similar disc could be issued for the insurance and MOT to be displayed. Seems logical to me but I am only a humble retired old codger now and they wont listen to the likes of me.

Agree with it all. It would mean visitors are paying for road wear and tear as well. but.. the powers that be would still want a 'registration fee' which would gradually creep back up. They cannot resist tinkering (increasing costs) with any system.
