The best route from Penrith to Onich

Hi

Last time we went to CC site at Bunree we had a few nights at Mofffat, this time booked into 5 van site at Penrith.

Went via M74 to Glasgow to Dunbarton, Loch Lomond onwards.

The better way seems to be M74, M73, A80 Stirling and onwards.

Thereby mising towing through Glasgow.

What is the Stirling to Onich road like as the AA no longer do Caravan routes.

When going to, or coming from the Fort William Area, we always use the A85, A82. We have used this route for years and have never had any problems, the road has been improved alot.

teh M8 thro. Glasgow is a bit of a mess at the moment due to substantial roadworks long tailbacks every day (I hear)but if you still go this way be careful between tarbert and crianlarich up the side of loch lomond it is quite narrow and twisting.

My preferred route would be M80 to beyond srirling A 84 to callender and on to crianlarich A 82 from there. I regularly drive busses on that road and with care at a couple of narrow bits on the road have no problems and the scenery is glorious.

I have just bought an AA 2006 road atlas, 7.49p. it came with a free CD route planner, there is a caravan route on the CD.

not adviseable towing caravan north on loch lomond if you can avoid it,M80 then via callander to crianlarich,best way to go

Yes, the route via Callendar, Crianlarich and Tyndrum is best; you can then stop at the Green Wellie stop at Tyndrum, which has an excellent restaurant/cafe; they also have a special place at the back of the car parl for caravans

We go to scotland every year and stay at Inverinate( near Skye) in a holiday cottage, we havent done the route yet in the caravan. Without van - we always do - M8/Dunbarton/loch lomond/Glencoe/fortwilliam route to our destination, but if we were towing we would consider a different route.

The route around loch lomond is very twisty, also very busy!...saying that if lorries/buses can do it, then why not a caravan?!

Stirling might be better

Hi Chelsea,

Remember,when towing at the head of Loch Lomond, from Tarbet onwards there are stretches with sheer rock face on one side,and with coaches,lorries and in particular.....forestry lorries,it can be a white knuckle ride at times.

For those of you not in a hurry,the following route can be used.The roads are quieter and the scenery is worth seeing.

A82 north to Tarbet....then turn left on to A83 to Inverary,then

turn right onto A819 until reaching t-junction with A85.Turn left along the shores of Loch Awe, and continue to Connel.....over the Connel Bridge until Ballachulish where it joins with the A82 north to Onich.

I have never done a mileage comparison and of course we live only an hour from Loch Lomond,but I much prefer this route for us to take.Everyone has their preferences.

hey maureen, I think we have come back that way before when we went to Argyll. You are so lucky to live up in that part of the world. We love Scotland so much, even considered moving there at one point - but then where would we holiday??!

We also love Scotland, and try to visit every year. We would love to move up when we retire, the only thing that would conern me is the weather during the winter, it can be a bit harsh at times. It's a far cry from that in Norfolk!!

We've got friends living in Ottery St.Mary,so we will be able to meet up with them when we come down in Sept.

Have used the Club site at Putts Corner a couple of times.....it's very pleasant too........and a pub within walking distance with really good food as well!!!

Did not enjoy Loch Lomond route last time, look forward to going via Stirling and different views.

The weather doesnt bother me Wendy, we always go in mid/late september/october for over 2 weeks, love the frosty mornings (when you can see your breath), mist on the loch and all crisp..cant beat it. Im a winter person, not summer!
