The wind makes my roof noisy

Hi,

We have a 1997 Elddis 505, it has a flat one peice roof that slopes down at the front, this Easter we have found that when its windy the roof at the front clatters and bangs, its seems as though its the outer skin that is loose and is been flapped with the wind, I do not much idea about the construction of a roof but I wouldn't have thought this to be normal, apart from the sleepless nights it causes, I'm concerned it could cause further damage and start to leak. Has anyone else had this problem? any advice would be much appreciated.

Regards Geoff

Have check by a dealer service engineer, I have not had that problem on mine in wind up to 60 mph.

Many caravans have the outer roof skin which is only attached at the sides and round roof-lights, etc - in fact apart from very recent caravans which have bonded roofs, they "all" have flappy roof panels.

For a '97 Elddis, I'd say it's perfectly normal.

We had a 1998 Eldiss taht did the same. Also had problems with water sitting on the top at the front as well as sort of created puddle.

No idea what it was. Think it started all by itself as didn't remember it like it when we first had it.

Can't shed any light onto what it is though as we have now sold the van ready to upgrade to a bigger one.

Hi Geoff

we had a 1988 Elddis Wisp 450CT; great van apart from the front section of roof that "popped" and sounded like Rolf Harris' "wobble board" ! This mainly happened when wind was head on whilst on site - any other angle, it was OK. You might find the same thing.

I've noticed that many vans approaching me whilst on the road have bowed in fronts above the window. Never really took much notice in the past but now I am aware it appears very noticeable.

I have been in touch with the local Caravan repairer where we are staying and he says the roof on this type and year of van is just a layer of aluminium layed over the roof with no bonding, and then just fixed and sealed at the edges, he recommends having a rooflight fitted in the area that is noisy thus bonding the roof down, hence before our next outing I intend to have one fitted and avoid any more sleepless nights on windy sites.
