Since it was doubled it is normally ok although obviously at peak times it can back up.If there are radio reports of problems you could always go via Widnes or Warrington and miss it altogether.
8am-10am and 4pm-6pm it's sometimes quite heavy, I've just come over it half hour ago and it was B******s, but it is Friday, choose your time wisely or go a different way.
Check the weather as well Lisa, if its very windy don't go over as it is very exposed. as others have said avoid the peak and traffic is usually not too bad, but the m6 in general is allways busy so expect some delays to your trip.
