Swift have stated that they no longer recommend the use of Thetford bathroom cleaner but on Swift Talk they will not say if it is a commercial decision or if there is a problem with the cleaner. Many postings are asking for the reason but no reply is forthcoming.
If it is a commercial decision have they fallen out with Thetford or are Swift afraid of legal action if they make an allegation regarding the cleaner ?

Good posting Mike, my better half always choses Thetford Stuff. She recons it smells nicer, nothing to do with compatibility.

The majority of bathroom fittings are not made by Thetford, except the toilet.

The other makers of items such as shower panels and wash basins have their own recommendations for cleaning, and if I remember correctly they advocate the use of mild soap only.

There are a number of household items such as mouthwash which can cause irrepairable damage to plastics used in caravans, as can other cleaning products which you may use at home.

It is wise to follow the individual cleaning recommendations of the individual item makers.

It makes you wonder if there has been damage allegedly caused by the cleaner, but you would think that if Thetford make the toilet they would produce an appropriate cleaner.

Ray.
A man of your experience will appreciate there is skulduggery in the caravan industry :)
A few years ago Bailey said don't use Fenwicks products. An ill founded no proof statement but someone else's we'd never heard of was okay. What absolute rubbish that statement was . I still use Fenwicks no issues.
And it's just the same with the Thetford story.
What infuriates me is the manufacturers think we are all thickoes
What they say goes yet their caravans still.leak :p

Regards the Bailey / Fenwicks saga that Dustydog mentioned, my recollection was more that Bailey stated it recommended one specific cleaner and it was that person who made various statements about not using Fenwicks. Think there may even have been some talk of legal action over it. Same as DD I've regularly used Fenwicks and personally would never use the recommended one purely because of the misleading claims made by that person at that time.

Damien makes a good point about normal household products causing damage to caravan bathroom items, one previous van we had ended up with a permanent multicoloured stain in the wash hand basin caused by toothpaste. On another occasion when we were getting ready to move on to the next site my wife placed one of those small battery operated air freshness into the washbasin, stuck it there so that it wouldn't fall off the shelf thinking it would be safe there. Some of the liquid leaked and the first time I turned on the hot water tap the basin started to dissolve, left a lovely hole in the bottom of the basin.
It would be interesting to know why Swift have stopped recommend the Thetford product.

I don't know if there is a practical reason why Swift have stopped recommending the product, but ceasing a recommendation is not the same as telling you NOT to use it.

The important thing to do is to look at what you are told to do, and to see if there are any particular agents to avoid, then check the content of products to see if there is any conflict.

Just as an example, we had a specialist isopropyl based cleaning tank system at work. It was supplied by a company who were owned by a large chemical clomgomerate are, who happened to make the particular cleaning agent it used. A few years later, we needed to get a second larger tank, but by now the tank manufacturer had been sold and was branded differently, and the instructions now did not recommend the original cleaner by name, but by its chemical specification.
