The wonderfully progressive clergyman, Father Tim Jones, a parish priest from York, has advised those in need to go out and shoplift - preferably from large chain stores.
Father Jones commented that God's love for the poor outweighs the property rights of the rich....
Actually, this was a message often preached by the late Father Brendan O'Flannel who served as chaplain to the Association Of Wandering Travellers (AOWT) for many years until his death in 2007.
Father O'Flannel, a fiery orator and aficionado of Irish whisky, used to hold his congregation spellbound as he urged upon them their Christian duty to remove caravans from driveways and storage compounds - always maintaining that God's love for poor travellers far outweighed any so-called 'rights' that caravan owners thought they had.
Always a controversial cleric, Father O'Flannel was arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods when police raided a harvest thanksgiving service in Doncaster that was attended by a large gathering of AWOT members, each of whom brought along a stolen caravan to donate to Father O'Flannel's missionary fund.
Although charges against him were later dropped, Father O'Flannel always maintained that he was doing nothing other than God's work - and demanded the return of the 37 caravans seized by police during the raid, stating that they had been donated to his church in good faith, and should be distributed at a knock-down price to travellers in need.
It's good to see someone like Father Jones taking up O'Flannel's mantle, now that good Priest has gone to sojourn in the great caravan site beyond the sky....
Anyway, I'm now off to Marks & Sparks to do *my* Christian duty - anyone want anything in particular?.....
