Toilet Waste holding tank

I was recently talking to a friend of mine who owns a narrow boat. He was telling me about how on some boats the owners put yeast tablets into the toilet waste holding tank instead of of the "blue" fluid commonly used by caravaners. He tels me that the solids break down just the same. He uses pink top tank fluid as the flushing additive.

Will using the yeast tablets kill bacteria, or create any-other problems, and are there any environment issuses that should be taken into account.

Greetings,

I can't possibly comment on the effectiveness of yeast in breaking down "organic material".

However, as a former baker, I do know that the use of yeast will give off, as a secondary agent, gas which will want to escape. The possible result will be an unusual odour to say the least!

While on a similar subject, can I remind all readers that, should they have cause to use their toilets at altitude, especially after travelling from a lower altitude, (Spanish coast to inland mountainous area for instance) remember to 'crack' open the seal prior to use.

Failure to do so will result in you 'Getting your own back!!!' due to the variation in pressure between the inside of the compartment and the outside atmosphere.

Yeast will release Carbon Dioxide and may cause excessive pressure in the holding tank, which may be enough to cause irreversible damage to the tank, cause you to get a lot more than you bargained for when you open the tank blade, and of course using anything other than the normal recommended fluids will invalidate any warranty.

The toilet in question is in fact vented so there won't be any problem with a build up of pressure. What I really was asking is if any-one has heard of yeast being used in the waste holding tank and :-

A. does it break down the solids and any paper in the tank.

B. does it present any harmfull environment problems.

C. does it kill any bacteria, or even does it/will it encourage a flourish in the bacteria etc.

D. will the pink fluid used in the top tank when flushing the toilet "kill" the yeast or will it help it.

I just can't get my head around the idea of useing brewers yeast tablets in the waste tank rather than blue or the new green fluid.

Hi Phillip

Surely you are taking the "urine"? Ha Ha.

I used to to do chemistry experiments at school. Why not give it a go in your caravan and tell us what happens.

Cheers

Alan

Alan, it's taken a long time for some-one to come up with that one,( I quite expected it to be said very early on) but I can assure you that I am NOT taking the urine.

As for trying it in my caravan you must be joking, I don't fancy the consequencies if anything goes wrong so thats why I asked on here if anyone had eber heard of it being used.
