I travel alone. When I had the Motorhome it was easy to pay at toll booths as I could walk across the cab and use the passenger window to access the toll machine. Now I've gone back to a caravan using a car with a centre consul I think it may be very difficult to access the toll machines. I'm sure the lane will be too narrow to exit the car and go round to the passenger side. Anyone found a solution to this problem?

There isn't a problem in getting out and walking arround, there is ample space. Alternatively, if you are just touring in France why not get a "tag" then you can just drive through.

William, read the threads on Toll tags and Sanef currently running in this same category.
Years ago I did a lot of solo travelling through France and got used to the getting in and out. I was a bit over sensitive about causing delay to those behind me. In recent years I've spent a considerable time waiting behind 'natives' fumbling for coins, putting credit cards into the wrong slot, touching up make up since they were stopped any way, and numerous other thins. I'm no longer too concerned about taking a minute or so, especially as I now have a tag. When this failed once on the last trip I was on the emergency phone for about 4 minutes and no one behind hooted or got impatient

Never had a problem in 15 years fiddling about trying to figure things out - except when I put the van in reverse and scared the bejasus out of the Italian guy in a Ferrari behind me. :)

We've seen solo drivers with a long handled 'grabber' for taking the ticket, or for putting it and a credit card in the automated tolls, or a fishing net in the days when most tolls were 'coin' operated, where the fishing net would be used to pass the appropriate amount of tolls to the toll booth operator!!

There is plenty of room for a solo driver to exit the cab and go around to the toll booth, though, and some booths (near Boulogne) have the ticket and payment on both sides!

The real worry now, is the unmanned booths.Large motorhomes are being charged as large lorries. If it happens to you don't worry about the people behind. Press the button and tell them your a motorhome.
