Towbar prices

A few weeks back i posted Mondeo Vs Galaxy as a forum topic.

Well, I went for the Mondeo 130 TDCI as it was just a better all round vehicle than the (outgoing) Galaxy- and I have just taken delivery.

Been phoning around for a quote on a detachable towbar with twin elecs and have not managed to speak to anyone who appears to have any decent levels of knowledge despite their ads stating 25 years of experience and such like? Prices seem to be quoted from the top of their heads and quotes ranged from £198 to £450??

I have booked a guy who fits at your home for £299.00- can any Mondeo owners confirm that this is about the right price- and are Mondeos a confusing fit for bars? There seems to be a lot of confusion as to which product actually fits the car and I suspect that my fitter is going to turn up with something that doesn't fit! Oh and while i'm asking- any downsides to having the work done at home rather than a workshop?

Thanks

Paul

A few years ago I used a mobile fitter who was cheaper than the rest, and I paid for it in the end as he didn't do a good job.

Recxommendation wins every time. If perchance you are within 1 hour of Petersfield I can recommend a brilliant company. If not, why not post your home town in a message and see if anyone local to you can recommend someone.

In my experience you get what you pay for.

Just a note

Brendon Witter (owner of witter towbars) has only ever allowed one fitter to officially fit witter towbars on a mobile basis. And that person does not fit them any more.

No other mobile fitter is authorised by Witter unless they are a main witter supplier who also do mobile installation. So ask if they have a fitting center, if they say no, walk away.

For years I have produced a device for carring a wheelchair on a tow bar ( like a Bike rack) as such I was always in a position of recomending people and organizations like Motability on the subject of obtaining tow bars.

From experence many mobile fitters are tempted to do a 'bodge job' if they haven't got the right kit with them.

It sometimes means that most jobs go well but the odd one is a disaster. Finding out on a motorway in France has serious drawbacks.

Hello

Thanks for all your advice- I am based in West London- but thank you to all those who offered advice.

I found- through word of mouth, they don't advertise- a great camping shop nearby that has a towbar fitting workshop (cancelled the mobile fitter) - and I can drop the car there at 7.30 so I can get to work on time. Can't believe how long it feels since I was able to tow the van (it's only been 5 weeks but seems like a lifetime)

Thanks for your help.
