Towbars

Hello, in the old days as a kid,i can remember my father making his own towing bracket for the back of the old rover p6 he owned.Made properly,2x2 angle across the rear ,with box section securing to the floor underneath. We did run a fleet of Bedfords in those days,so he was hands on.Ive often wondered whats to stop this now,and is it now deamed illegal?

Towbars and the law

European Law now states that all light passenger vehicles registered on or after 1st August 1998 require a type approved towbar tested to EC94/20 and towball with suitable D&S value. This is not retrospective and does not affect any vehicle registered before this date. Other vehicles not subject to type approval are ~ commercial vehicles, car derived vans and motor caravans.
