Re posted from new members section on behalf of David:

I am looking to sell my motorhome and purchase a caravan & tow car. The caravan I like has maximum weight of 1375kgs. I would welcome any help / advice on a tow car. I would want an estate car, I have been looking through varioys brochures, but any views from caravanerswill be of a great help.

thanks

David

No mention of the vehicle being new or second-hand,but in the same sort of boat, and with normal daily running costs being my concern,

I have been looking at diesel estates, like the Mondeo 2.0tdci 130bhp and Vectra 1.9 150 bhp which fall into the sub 160 CO2 brand and have big boots and kit.2005 models can be had for sub 5k ! so pretty good value.

lately looked at slightly older cars Volvo,BMW, and Mercedes, and the c220 cdi appeals to my not least the badging but a slightly older 2003/2004 model could be gotten for somewhere under 6k,and like the BMW is rear wheel driven, and not bad on the fuel either.best thing is to do your homework and test drive a few, find the one that suits you best,as all the above can tow the caravan you have in mind.

I'm impressed by my Jaguar X-type estate 2.2d manual 6 speed. It tows my Swift 5 berth 1250kg van with ease.

5th gear is perfect for towing at 60mph as the engine is at peak torque (2000rpm). It easily held 60 even going up some big motorway inclines.

It also returned 28mpg towing from lancs to the lake district & back in the bad weather we had at the weekend. Solo MPG is between 35-48 depending on the roads.

Hi David

I tow with a 2 ltr 130bhp Mondeo Estate diesal 2004model,It towes with ease my caravan fully loaded about 1400kg . Road tax is &145 this year , Solo driving local is up to 40mpg Motorway work it will do 50 to 55mpg (sticking to speed limit] towing it averages 32mpg a bit more on long motorway journeys using 5th gear at asteady 60mph with cruise control .Only fault with car in last 2yrs is a windscreen washer motor.

Hope this helps with your choice of tow car

Regards PCV Dave.
