I recently purchased a 2007 Adria Altea 542UK - currenly towing with a Honda CRV. Company car is due to change to 2007 VW 1.9TDI Golf - will this car tow my Altea?

Your Altea weighs 1300kg laden. The Golf is 1389kg making it a 94% match.

this is pasted directly from whattowcar for your outfit:

The match between car and caravan is plausible in accordance with a mix of European standards. However, according to the British Towing Code the percentage (loaded caravan / kerbweight tow car) is 94%.

The towing performances of this Volkswagen with your Adria are good (performance index = 89 km/h or 55 mph).

You may expect more than adequate performances from this outfit. On flat roads you can come along provided you've selected the right gear, in which case top gear is applicable under favourable circumstances.

On motorway inclines you will be able to come along provided you've selected the right gear. On steep roads you have more than sufficient power to keep going. On hill starts there will be more than enough power to get going, provided the wheels have traction.

Thanks for your response - we are very new to caravaning and still a bit confused.

What is the 85% rule and based on your figures, does this mean we are able to tow our caravan using the Golf?

I have no reason to doubt Andrew's figures but it is always good practice to confirm the legality of an outfit by checking details in the car owner's handbook or VIN plate.

The 85% rule is not a rule at all but only a recommendation. The 94% that Andrew mentions is obviously over that 85% recommendation. That doesn't mean that the outfit is unsuitable, only that you will need to exercise a bit of extra care when driving.
