Towing advice please

Hi everyone I'm new here so any advice is greatly appreciated. I am currently looking at buying my first caravan. Firstly, I have a 2007 Mazda 6 2 litre petrol estate and I'm not sure if this is entirely suitable for towing as it is not a diesel. Secondly the car has a kerb weight of 1395 kilos as listed on the logbook and I have seen a couple of second hand vans with a MPTLM of 1300k and 1326k respectively. Is this combination generally deemed safe and how well will the 2.0l petrol engine cope.

Many thanks

Hello Rubberduck,

It seems the Mazda 6 2.0 litre petrol estates have manufactures towing limit of 1500Kg, so technically the car will pull your caravan, But, the towing ratio (caravan MTPLM/Car kerb weight x 100)is in the region of 95%. this is a high ratio especially for a novice. It is better to either get a heavier tow car or a lighter caravan. as a guide line it is suggested as ratio of 85% is a good starting point.

As for using towing match web sites, they are known to have some errors in their databases, so only use them as a rough guide, always get the real figures for the car and caravan from their data plates, handbooks or the manufacture.

Thanks for your responses it is much appreciated.

I tried towsures website but there kerb weight for my car was different to my logbook so did not have much confidence in them.

I did though suspect that my car to caravan ratio was not ideal but was just wanting to hear from someone with experience so many thanks and back to the drawing board
