Although the Galaxy is a big car it is very limited in what it can tow. In fact the current Mondeo can tow a heavier caravan than the Galaxy or S-Max can. A cheaper solution would be to get a folding dog ramp, which allows the dog to walk up into the boot. One of my labradors has arthritis in her front legs and I use one of these. They cost about

No problem,

I was considering a Galaxy or S-Max, but both of these cars are not rated for towing caravans of the weight that their kerb weight would suggest. The new mark 4 Mondeo actually can tow a heavier caravan despite having a lower kerb weight. Kia do a large MPV which I think can tow a heavier caravan than the Galaxy.

According to the Bailey web site the 2009 Senator Louisiana's MTPLM is 1686Kg.

The current Galaxy data from Ford indicates that you would need a minimum of the Diesel 2.0litre (140ps) engine. Which has a max permitted towed limit of 1750Kg, with a kb of 1805 to 1840Kg (depending on exactly which model) This would give you a ratios of about 90 to 95%.

Weight ratios are not the only thing that affects towing stability, you must ensure good load distribution within the caravan, and most of all don't expect sports car handling when towing.

In its favour, the Galaxay (and other mpv's) have relatively long wheel bases, and relatively short rear overhangs, and this is usually a positive advantage when towing

These models would be compatible in terms of legal weigh limits. But as always it is better to keep the trailer as light as possible - (move a few more items into the car.)

Compared to the Disco, the fuel consumption should be much better.

Regardless of what the official tow limits are, the Galaxy / S-max are designed to be 7 seaters and carry higher loads on the rear axle and will have stiffer rear ends to cope with this and will almost certainly be more stable than the Mondeo or any other saloon of similar weight.

We use an S-max to tow a twin axle 1600 kg van but the unladen weight is only 1266 kg so we never go near the MTPLM it is a very stable towcar but typical fwd traction. the car was very good for the first two years / 37,000 miles but has gone into system failiure since then "Which" rated it as the most unreliable car on sale in 2008, ours is currently back in the garage with starting problems again.

If the new Mondeo shares so many common components it is only a matter of time before the disastrous reliability shows up in the Mondeo too.
