Towing weight explained. Please help!

Post 1997 license so combined weight I can drive/tow is 3500kg. Current car Kerb weight 1613, gross weight 2160. I've been told I can tow fully laden caravan upto 1340. Is that correct?
Is the calculation based on kerb weight or gross weight? Seem to be getting conflicting information.
Please treat me as stupid and explain what weight I can tow. Thanks.

Your right on the 3500 kg but be aware that the limit relates to the plated weights of car and van combined. So even if they were both unloaded you must not exceed the plated sums of Gross Vehicle Weight plus MTPLM.

1,340 kg MTPLM is the maximum you can tow - as Otherclive states, it's the sum of the plated maximum weights that's used for licencing limits.

I've heard people say that the Gross Train Weight (3,925 kg on your VIN sticker) can't exceed 3,500 kg but that is wrong.

The caravan must have a MTPLM of 1340kg or less for you to be legal. The actual weight is irrelevant the limit is the MTPLM.
There are plenty of 2 berth caravans you can tow at that weight and a number of others with more berths, but the latter will tend to be lightweight and more basic.

Sprite Musketeers TD come in below 1300kg and can ( at a pinch) sleep five albeit three will be children. We use ours for two oldies and a mid teenager and it's comfortable with all off the features you need for a comfortable stay. Also has a decent payload compared to some two berth mainstream models where it can be as low as 125kg.

There are also the more modern Sprite Alpines too.
