Hi

we had a 1.5Dci megane that on paper could pull 1300kgs - but I would not want to try it, our Citroen C3 diesel completed outclassed the Renault so we sold it within 6 weeks and kept the C3 and brought a Honda CRV - sorry...

Colin,

Renault have an unhelpful practice of quoting maximum towing weights (MTW), which when added to the maximum gross vehicle weight (MGW) exceed the maximum gross train weight (GTW).

Example (I'm making the numbers up to illustrate, yours should be in your handbook or the plate on the car) -

Kerbweight 1400kg

MGW 1900kg - means you can load the car with up to 500kg

MTW 1300kg - means you can tow up to 1300kg (but see below)

GTW 2900kg - means the maximum allowed, laden weight of the outfit.

You can see from the above that if you were to put a full load in the car, so it weighed 1900kg, you could not tow more than 1000kg without exceeding the GTW.

Most manufacturers quote a max tow weight than can be used with a fully loaded car - if any others do it the Renault way I don't know which they are.

Of course I'm only talking about legality here - I don't know anything about how they tow, but please check all the weights for your Renault, not just the max towing weight, if you do consider towing with it.

thanks a lot guys for your comments I do understand the figures but i'm realy after some comments from people who do tow with a megane and what they tow with it.I know it should tow the bailey ok. but does it?

its got the 1.9 diesel turbo engine max touque @2400 rpm thats about 55mph (average towing speed) with the 78kw power unit.

on a 52 plate its got the same floor pan as the scenic witch does tow iv'e seen them. the bailey's one of the lightest in its class so in theory its fine weight wise.

BUT in practice mmmmm untill I get a bar on it I wont know will I?. thats why I posted the question. I have just bought the car It goes well and yes the vin plate says it will (another but)?

it was I thought the right car at the right price for the job I only tow twice a year rest of the time it goes to and from work 40 miles a day @50 ish mpg other wise i'd buy a freelander

Hi Colin

we used to tow with an 03 Scenic 1.4 petrol, only towing an Eriba Familia (850kgs) - it did work, but I have to say it was a struggle and did not make for comfortable driving.

the 1.9tdi should be a lot better but you may still find it lacking in power and, as per previous comments you have to watch your weights as from memory Renault only quote weights including the driver ONLY, no passengers or luggage.

needless to say we have traded-up to a Kia Sportage 2.0tdi which makes for far more comfortable journeys.
