Does anyone know how you can tell if a tracker is fitted to a company car or van? Surely there's a tell-tale sign somewhere??

Cheers, Dan.

A lot of company cars have a warning sticker, mainly to deter theft, but it is not necessary to have any indication at all.

As it is a company vehicle they have the right to install any device they want, and as long as the driver is going about his business only, and not using the vehicle for "private" use, then there is no problem.

i work for a haulage company and all of the vehicles have trackers fitted which came in usefull when we had a truck hi-jacked recently, the driver was flagged down by a overtaking car and the passenger said that the back doors on the trailer were open and the plonker got out of the cab and left the engine running, you can guess what happened next!so he was left standing in a lay-by watching the truck drive off into the distance...he flagged down a passing car and told the driver what had happened and phoned the police then phoned the boss at home (this was at 11pm by the way) the boss got in contact with the police when he got to the office and told them where the truck had stopped. the end result was truck and load recovered,4 men arrested, and memos sent out to all drivers telling us to put a padlock on the rear doors before leaving a cutomers depot.....by the way the driver involved got a warning letter from the boss

Tracker needs power and needs to get a signal out to be tracked. The tracker itself needs to be hidden so behind dashboard or centre console is a favourite place.

Dan,

The whole point of a tracker is that the thieves don't know if or where its fitted, the only way you can find out is to take the car or van apart to locate it. Yo could always ask your employer if one is fitted & for what purpose.

All of my companys vehicles are fitted with a tracker, not to track the vehicles but to activate in the case of a theft of a vehicle.

My last company had them in their cars they said it was to do with efficency, when a service call came in they could see which engineer was closet!!!

Felt like big brother was watching you?We ended up staying on site longer and the amount of calls we attended went down.

These were placed in the dash and took a few hours to fit.

Michael, my thoughts exactly!!! I am led to beleive(by employer) there's a tracker on my company van. I just thought there may be a way of actually confirming this, or is he just trying to make sure we don't use the vans for popping to the local shop??

Hi Dan,

A company I worked for a few years ago had trackers fitted to all company vehicles. When I questioned thier integrity, I was informed that this was for insurance purposes only. As I paid Company Car Tax and personal Fuel tax I could use the car for personal use. I was never questioned regarding usage but when a colleague was drawn over the coals for making a weekend journey of some 150 miles we stuck together and protested at being 'Tracked'. The company backed down when we recieved legal advice and the company never questioned anybody again.

The trackers that were fitted to our cars and vans were hidden behind the dash but were also fitted with a traffic master button to enable the driver to have traffic information.

The print-outs that were available at the end of each week were only of the times the vehicle was started and stopped and on which day and were very hard to decipher.

Anyway, you can get the vehicle 'scanned' to determine if there is a tracker fitted as the unit will transmit a signal.

Hope this helps

Andrew

I would have thought that any self-respecting employer would have the decency to tell his employees if a tracker was fitted. I'd certainly be livid if I was not told that my employer could conceivably spy on my whereabouts when a company car is provided also for private use. I'd consider that to be equivalent to potential phone tapping.

We were told trackers were being fitted.

They did compare timesheets with car movement especialy when you claimed overtime, everyone rounds time up but we got paid for the exact hrs that we did.

What we started doing were core hours only and didnt do the overtime that they wanted.

Started at 9 took an hr for lunch and finished at 5.30.No calls during lunch hrs or out of hrs they wouldnt back down on tracker though.
