Transformer/Charger

On my Lunar Chateau 470 all electrics mains and 12v from car appear to go thro the caravan transformer box. When connected to the car with the engine running a continuous rapid clicking comes from the transformer box in the caravan, this happens with the fridge on or off. I think but unproven after a few miles the clicking stops or slows right down. So it seems as though it is something to do with the charging of the caravan battery. Have tried other cars and the same thing happens. Any help appreciated?

Hi Gordon

The clicking sound is probably a relay to allow your caravan battery to charge from your car alternator when the engine is running. It's nothing to worry about.

Thanks, so even with this relay clicking in and out is the car still supplying 12v to the fridge and caravan battery? Also thinking about it after a journey when the car ignition is switched off the relay clicks for 15-30 seconds.

Hello Gordon,

I cannot agree with Parksy on this one.

It is highly unlikely that the charger is designed to rapidly click, and so the fact that it does suggests that something is not right.

As I cannot inspect the system to ascertain the cause, (nor can Parksy) I cannot say its 'nothing to worry' about. It may have no safety implications, but for your own peace of mind, I think you would be wise to get the caravan checked by a dealer who can investigate and hopefully identify what is causing the noise.

i agree with john, id get this looked at, not many relaying click fast, this sounds like a wiring fault somewhere, the worse case from this is that the relay could over heat and catch fire but fuses should stop that. i might only only be a loose wire but like john said without looking at it we cant be sure.

I agree. I have a van with a similar charger system and it does not do as you describe.
