went there tonight and was surprised at how many traveller vans and motorhomes there. Many newish vans, kids running around the carpark playing with trolleys even one van inside the carpark with a gas cylinder out front.Should think a lot of people are turning round and going home.We were in and out like a shot, the kids were walking slowly accross the entrance blocking people in and out.How long are they allowed to stay there before they are moved on and where do they get their water from?

Before this topic becomes the usual kind of thread about Travellers, be advised that it will be watched and removed if necessary.

To pick up on a few points raised though, whilst staying on a respectable commercial site recently I saw several vans with gas cylinders outside, lots of children playing with all kinds of things in the car parking area, and children walking slowly across roads.

As for asking about how long are they going to be allowed to stay, it is pointless asking on a forum, the only people who can answer that is the store or the local council.

I regularly work in the Washington/Sunderland areas and there are some lovely wide green verges which seem to attract a good deal of travellers at varying times of the year.

I noticed yesterday that the local council have dug a trench around each grassed area and piled the spoils up on the inside of each trench.

I suppose that they will look ok once they are covered in grass but are a bit of an eyesore at the moment.

It seems a good idea to prevent the illegal use of the verges, but I wonder how long it will be before the travellers find a simple way across eg. back filling with a shovel.

10 out of 10 to the local authority for trying.

The Washington Makro car park may just be next !!

Ken - the Council's action of excavating a trench along side a road, whilst commendable in its intended use, surely could also be a highway hazard ahould a vehicle leave the road and fall into the ditch. Again depending on the use of the road could it also be dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists. I shouldn't think it will be long before the H&E brigade get involved and the Council will have to back fill the ditch

Dave in answer to your question I know that in Scotland it depends upon the local council.

I live in Fife and they are allowed 2 weeks after being reported but in Tayside the limit is much shorter.

As for water when they were on the industrial estate where I worked they sometimes just use the fire hydrants or in 1 case took a hose off a chap washing his van and made the usual threats to him.

Your missed question is where do they do the toilet. The chap I mentioned about above had his letter box urinated through and muck spread over his door handles because he complained to the police about the assault.

When everyone on the estate took collective action to get rid of them it was found that in the bushes there were piles of 2 tyres that had been used as toilets.

I aslo know what you mean about the kids at the entrance as they did that at our estate and most of the women walking to and from work felt very intimadated.

It was only when I had occasion to complain to the police about there interfering with fire hydrants and commiting lewd acts in public that I realised that we had 2 different legal systems. The sargent on the desk just did not want to know saying it was the fire brigades problem and asking if I had managed to get a photo of them in the act. I replied if I do this on the way home from the pub on a Saturday night I presume I will not get lifted and he just shrugged his shoulders.

This is absolutely true.

When our local council cleaned up after a 4 month visit from Those Who Must Not Be Named In These Forums, large piles of excrement were to be found everywhere - as it happens, easy to spot due to the toilet paper festooning the bushes.

Lovely.

As a point of interest, may of Those Who Must Not Be Named In These Forums refuse to use toilets in caravans because they're unhygienic

Just one more vibrant cultural thread to weave into Britain's shroud.

Quote .. "it was found that in the bushes there were piles of 2 tyres that had been used as toilets".

This gets me puzzling and in my thirst for knowledge I have a question :O)

The 'Those Who Must Not Be Named In These Forums' who decided to settle outside the Ambulance Station I was based at never used this method.

'Those Who Must Not Be Named In These Forums Who Settled By Us' used the ditch outside our rest room window while we were eating. This was seen by all the staff and 'Those Who Must Not Be Named In These Forums' never as much as raised a blush to cover their modesty. They never even littered the countryside with toilet paper, they simply didn't use any.

My question is this ... is there a class system among 'Those Who Must Not Be Named In These Forums'. Did we have the equivalent of a sink estate family settle by us?

Or was it just simply that our 'Those Who Must Not Be Named In These Forums' were greener than the upper class 'Those Who Must Not Be Named In These Forums' than those squatting at Coventry?

No bog paper littering the trees or sullied, smelly tires left lying about. Just excretement in the water courses letting nature take its course :O)

' Those Who Must Not Be Named In These Forums' -

Caravan Dealerships or caravan park proprietors?

I'm sorry but this thread has left me with the unshakeable mental image of a caravan salesman emerging from the bushes with a half used bog roll and a satisfied expression :0)

Parksy you have forgotten about the caravan insurance agent also lurking in the bushes.

Caravan salesmen never frequent bushes for their comfort breaks - they're usually trained to dump on their customers.

'Those Who Must Not Be Named On These Forums' are allowed a miximum of two week on a public place. they came to a field near us (no, not a circus) and broke in and caused mayhem on local streets. they were moved on after a few days and it took weeks to get the field secured against them again and the massive amouts of damaged to be repaired. i dread to think what thed did with their toilets...
