Hi Folks, Myself and the other half are towing to Anglesey in September, Steve in Leo, has given me some good advice about avoiding road works near Leominster, on route from Pontypridd, Hereford, Shrewsbury, then taking the A5 towards Anglesey. Having never driven to North Wales before, I would be grateful for any advice with problems along route and what hazards to look out for.

Regards

It's a much nicer drive up the middle via Rhyadyr and Machynlleth. It may be a bit longer, but it is spectacular. We did the journey two weeks ago, with no problems.Around five hours with stops for lunch and doggie breaks.

No major hazards in Anglesey, once you're over the bridge it's usually a very quiet raod, bit bumpy here and there as in some places it's starting to sink a little, take it easy if it's windy though, very open stretch of road and can catch you out, plenty of lay-bys.

Where abouts are you staying?.

Hi Martin, thanks for getting back. We are staying at Ty Hen Caravan/Camping Park, Rhosneigr, Anglesey. Our daughter mover up there last March with her husband who is based at RAF Valley. The site is only a couple of miles from where they live.

Graham,

Richard Brunstrom is the chappie responsible for a `zero-tolerance` attitude to speeding, with speed cameras, speed guns, marked and unmarked cars and vans across the area.

If he spent as much time on other criminals we may all want to live in the area, but its harder to catch a thug or burglar so it won`t happen.

Be warned, any transgression will be met with a prosecution, so watch your speedo at all times!!! If you get chance to glance at the roads or the scenery as well, so much the better.

Thanks Angus, sorry I was half asleep when reading your post looking after grandchildren all day and all that!!! Yes I forgot about him, hopefully my speed camera detector will come in handy on this trip then. Towing a 23ft caravan should keep my speed down a bit!!!

All the best

I agree about the route from the South being more attractive via the middle of the country but it would make more sense to go Brecon, Builth Wells, Newtown. Equally attractive and less congested and distance than via Leominster.

At Newtown you could opt to go via Dolgellau or carry via Welshpool and Oswestry. At Oswestry the choice is the A5, attractive but much slower than nipping up to Chester and getting on the A55 which is dual carriageway all the way to Valley.

The A55 from Chester to Holywell is to be avoided on Fridays nights and Saturday/ Sunday mornings on a good sunny day as the trippers pour into North Wales.

You should find the routes through the middle relatively traffic free, particularly if you head towards Dolgellau. The downside is you do get some vehicles driving at very high speeds and there have been numerous fatal accidents. The region is particularly popular with motorbikes who drive round in large groups disregarding the law.The fatality rate amongst them is particularly high, much above the national average. The North Wales Police have made it a target to reduce this carnage.

Mr Brunstrom got into trouble recently for showing a picture of a decapitated biker's head still in his helmet. The picture was intended for the press's private viewing to try and get the message through that speed does kill and the press can play a positive role rather than the negative "taliban" type of reporting. This particular biker had been wearing a T-shirt with an anti-police message emblazoned on it. It made identifying the head easy for the press as that part had already been reported at the time of the accident. The story of the photo was then leaked. The family of the deceased were outraged. The dead mans father was demanding resignations, etc and consulting a solicitor ( compensation claim?)He claimed that he had gone to great lengths to protect the deceased's family from the whole truth.

Really. The biker, a middle aged married man with a family, had overtaken another vehicle and hit an oncoming car at an estimated speed of 90 MPH. What about the stress the occupants suffered ? ( To say nothing of the danger and potential injuries) Who had to go and clear up the mess ?

Keep up the good work Mr Brunstom. Keep speeding off our roads.Too many people feel invincible on the roads and have little regard for others.

Incidentally, you will also find that North Wales, and Anglesey in particular has one of the best crime detection and reduction rates in Britain.

Go on Angus, check the facts before you pass further judgement.

Well actually Rioja, I will take issue with what you have said.

If you think that a proliferation of speed cameras will make the roads safer, I`ll let continue along your deluded way until you get hit by a speeding, unlicenced, uninsured driver in a stolen car. Your beloved cameras don`t stop THEM do they?

I think you`ll find that North Yorkshires roads are safer, and how many cameras do they have? NONE. Instead they have Plod out doing something worthwhile, stopping cars and confiscating them from the unlicenced and uninsured. i.e getting them off the road, and prosecuting the criminals.

i know it doesn`t produce much revenue, but it does result in safer roads. Exactly the opposite of cameras that penalise those who are registered, taxed and insured, but let the others off. Thats fair?

And no, speed doesn`t kill.

Bad driving kills. At any speed.

Actually, the North Wales Police regularly have detector vans with the objective of catching uninsured, untaxed and stolen vehicles. Both drugs and arms have been recovered during this process too. There are very few fixed speed cameras in North Wales.

Yes I agree speed isn't necessarily a killer, but neither is bad driving. A combination of the two certainly increases the likely hood of fatalities.Currently, drivers who cause death by bad driving escape with a very small punishment compared to the misery the have caused.
