Having just used the water heater for the first time after 2nd annual service a few weeks ago I found on arrival at a site today that the heater no longer works on electric (gas ok) and NO I did not start it on electric minus water in tank!. 240v supply ok to element . Will get multimeter to check resistance of element but my question is does anyone know the procedure for replacing the element as I can just see the dealer throwing his hands in the air and denying all responsibility!!!!! At the moment I can see that the whole front bunk will need dismantling to access and remove the top cover (swift charisma 2006) Can the element then be replaced without removal of the whole tank /unit ? Can anyone give approx cost of element? Many thanks from a wet and windy site........!

Hi Gerard, It really depends on the location of the water heater, usually in the Swift Group of caravans removal of the element is posible without removing the heater from the van, there is no need to dismantle the bunk or the heater, first isolate the 240volt supply, if you locate the water feed pipes on the heater you will see a star shaped cut out pressed into the cardboard cover of the heater, open this up, then you will see the element, drain the tank, remove the nuts 7mm from memory, draw the element out, there are two sizes depending on the model of heater 450w or 850w, when you replace the element make sure you get the element the correct way up and the o-ring is in place, do'nt over tighten the nuts, make your electrical connections, fill the tank, check for leaks, switch on the power, job done. if your in any doubt about any stage of this operation please get a competant engineer to do the job for you.

It's been a while since we have had that heater, now got an alde system, but I seem to remember that it has got a reset button if it overheats,Ours was hidden from view around the back of the unit where the mains lead enters unit.As I say not 100% sure but worth a look, you never know.If you have the Truma Electric 230v element in your gas fire,it is similar set up as that.

Many thanks Metz for the swift ? pun? response . I tested the element today and it proved ok I then tested back towards the mains charger unit and eventually found a pin supplying the water heater in one of the multi pin connector sockets on the rear of the charger unit had not been inserted properly when the charger/ distribution unit had been made . When connected up to the plug it had made a light contact which over time had heated up and burned the connector. Need to see now how Swift will look at a warranty claim. It is a stone wall manufacturing error . (I am an electronics engineer and have assembled /repaired similar panels in the past and have the good fortune to know what I am talking about ) Again many thanks...

I concur. Its worth checking for a reset button. When I went to pick up my brnad new van 3 years ago, whilst the salesman was showing me how to operate all the onboard appliances we noticed the water heater did not work (was hooked up to electric) The salesman could not understand it as it has been passed a serviceible by the workshop. What has happened (apparently) during the final pre delivery clean the cleaner has knocked the water heater switch to 'on' whilst it was empty which tripped the system. He simply pressed the reset and the water got hot.
