We have just bought a three yr old Swift and on hook up to the site as soon as you turn on the water heater, it pops the circuit. We have stripped down the heater to the point where the circuit pops when you connect the element. Has anyone else had this problem, when the water heater is so young? We cannot get to the element and in the process of trying to strip it. ps the gas heats up fine.

Donna, yes had the same problem.

Check the whole length of the mains cable from the heater element to the plug joint, ours had been stapled through the cable on assembly.

To change the element you need the correct plug terminal to suit your van.

The point where the cable enters the grey cover, cut a window in it, not fully cut out, just like a door, the element is held by 2 nuts and the over temp sensor is held by 2 as well, both have to be changed at the same time as they are integral to each other.

its awkward, and dont drop the nuts, they are impossible to find again, use a nut driver with some mastic or blu tac in the end to stick them safely.

Hello Donna,

I am sorry to read of your problem. Damian has given the most likely solution but, even though the problem is with the electrics, if the appliance needs to be removed or disconnected from the gas supply then it must be done by a competent person working to the gas regulations. That is the law

Donna, one way of reconnecting is to cut the mains cable as close to the old element as possible (making SURE no mains are connected to the van of course)and use a waterproof connector box or, strip the wires on the new element cable ends and the old cable ends enough to make a solder joint and use heatshrink to make each wire waterproof after soldering, and also have a heatshrink to cover the two joints and about 1/2 an inch overlap on each cable.

If you do this method, put the large heatshrink on one of the wires first, then small heatshrink on each cable to be joined before soldering.
