Hi guys

I have a sprite major 5 (2006) with an omni aerial.

I would like to get a freeview box to use with the tv inside the van to get access to the other digital channels other than BB1, 2 ITV, C4 and C5

Is it possible to use a set top box from a caravan?, I am not sure whether the built in aerial can cope or not.

Regards

Andy

Hello Andrew,

We took our freeview box with us when we went to scarborough for the weekend, and we couldnt get a picture, we just got a message saying aerial not connected even though it was.

however this was because the omni 315 aerial which we had was useless even on normal tv, and every other van had great big household type ones attached way up above their caravans on their jockey wheels.

saying that it worked fine in the caravan at home, so i guess its like normal tv it depends on the strength of the signal in the area you are going. you could always just ask the site what the tv recetion is like , if its ok then it will work fine on your freeview. my mum in laws in edinburgh at the mo at she is getting a really good reception (after an hour on the phone to her to explain again how it works )

We use a normal household aerial on a mast. We've never had any trouble getting full signals.

Most of the fitted aerials on modern caravans are pretty useless.

We were parked next to a brand new Bailey Senator unit last weekend, and THEY ended up coming to watch TV in our 1986 Lunar because they couldn't get any signal at all.

It takes us about five minutes to erect our mast, and the cable then plugs into a socket in the front locker, which connects to the interior socket.

hi we just come back from isle of wight and my aerial on roof of van was rubbish at picking up normal stations.. i went to buy a freeview box and used my aerial that i connect to the pole on a frame and box worked perfectly.. when we were packing up to come home i took the areial down and took the cable off and the box still worked with the cable attached to the box and left daggling out of the front window )

It depends on the signal strength and weather. I have taken my freeview box for my annual stay in Dover for the last six years. I use an external aerial on the the jockey wheel to get good recetion. 4 years ago on setup I got the Dutch Digital Freeview service and had to retune again for the UK service. This year I am getting good reception without an external aerial just the Status and its amplyfier. They may have increased the signal strength. Incidentley for French speakers visiting France I was able to pick up some of their digital stations using the same equipment I use in the UK although not in out of the way places and only using the Status.
