I've heard that twin axle caravans aren't welcome at french / continental sites - does anyone have any views? Have you had problems? Have you been abroad and not had a problem? So far I am thinking that, as usual, we only hear of the problems and not the positive experiences people have had. Please let me know of your experiences.

a lot of pitches in france are massive and will accomodate a twin axle but you may find that the access roads limit your size,in spain the pitches are smaller and access tighter

The main reason twin axles have a problem is because a lot of itinerants use them, generally towed by large white vans. Sites obviously don't want these 'travellers' on their sites, so they discourage twin axles and some sites do have an absolute ban. However, check with the site first - usually there is a pointer on the website if they object to twin axles. Most pitches are able to accommodate a twin axle and on our holiday this year there were twin axles on all the sites we visited - and no-one had experienced problems.

Dear Gwyn

We have a twin axle caravan and have taken it to France for the last 2 years, in Normandy and the Vendee without any problems. The way to avoid any nasty business is to always check when booking that they are accepted on the sites you want to stay. We've used "Sites Abroad" but I'm sure they all would be as helpfull if warned.Alot of the pitches or emplacements as the French call them are rather on the small side, so if you can get them ,pay a bit extra and book a larger pitch. Good Luck
