Before 2000, date codes were generally 3 digits, then only the last digit counts and they they would be 99, there should be an arrow head after the numbers showing which decade and the first two digits the week of that year.

You saying it has a 4 digit code makes me suspect your looking at the wrong numbers?

kevin when you are reading the tyre date i can't remember without looking at a tyre which way it is but it is year and week of the year, so it would be 4208.. meaning week 42 of 2008. or the other way round obviously.

I would say 47th week of 99, I would though expect the arrow head after the nine, ie 479> or 479⇦br/>
one arrow denotes 80's and the other 90's but not sure which is which now.

In 2000 the date became 4 digits and clear to read, first two the week and second pair the year, therefore your tyres are still 10yrs old and well passed their useful life
