Type 1 diabetic and keeping under 3.5t

Evening all,

First time poster and apologies if this has been asked before. I’m type 1 diabetic so need to keep the MAM under 3.5t, we have a Mazda cx-5 which we don’t want to change that has a max gross weight of 2,035, we really want a Swift Sprite Major 6 and seen one that weighs 1,468 which is going to take me 3kg over the MAM, can I get the max gross weight of the caravan down graded for its max gross weight?

AFAIK the MAM limit of 3500kg applies just to the car with a further 3500kg available for the trailer, theoretically, as limits of the car apply - unless there's a specific weight limit for Diabetes - my medically restricted licence allows me to drive any outfit complying with BE but not C1E.

Thanks for the reply, I think I need to speak to DVLA as I was sure I could only have a max train weight of 3.5. If what you’re saying is correct that makes a huge difference to my option. I passed my car test in 2004, Will this mean I need to do a separate trailer license to tow up to 7t max train weight?

There was a period when new drivers only got B and had to take a trailer test to get the +E but that changed retrospectively so that everyone gets BE - if your licence hasn't been replaced recently it may still show just B but will be upgraded to BE next time you replace it.

In U.K. you can wait for BE to be included when your licence is next renewed if you go to Europe your licence must show BE, so you would have to have it renewed before travel.
