Hi All

Newbie paul again

Looking in the book it says the tyre pressure on my Sterling Eccles Amethyst (single Axel) should be 60psi seems a bit high to me. The max pressure on the tyre says Max load 1709 @ 65psi The mtplm is 1436 should the tyres be inflated to the max ? My tyre pressure gague only goes to 50psi !!!!!

Hi Paul,

Why do you believe that 60psig is a "bit high"?

It's the printed value in your handbook after all... But if you want convincing, then one way to calculate a tyre pressure is as follows:

1. Take the caravan MTPLM (in kg) and divide this by the number of wheels on the caravan. In your case this will be 1436/2 or 718kg

2. Divide the figure above by the maximum tyre load (in kg). In your case this will be 718kg divided by 1709lbs (or 776kg) and gives 0.925

3. Multiply this by the maximum inflation pressure. In your case 0.925 x 65psig, which gives a recommended inflation pressure of 60.1psig

And that's why your handbook says 60psig...

Buy a new pressure gauge too

Many tyre pressure gauges and pumps only go up to 50psi - fine for cars, but not for caravans and trucks.

I'd have done the same calculation as Rob - since it gives the same figure as Swift, it must be right.

Hi Paul, you can buy battery operated digitial air pressure guages from Halfords, which will give you readings a lot higher than the metal quages.

My previous van had amptlm of 1490Kg and a tyre pressure of 62PSI! A digital pressure gauge is the answer. Don't bother with garage forecourt pumps as most of them won't go that high before your money runs out! The free ones at supermarkets are not much better. Invest in a 12v pump that you can plug into the vans 12v or the cars cigar lighter. They take a while, but they will get to high pressure.

Many Thanks for all your replys, i thought the pressure was a bit high taking in to account you only put around 33psi in car tyres but there are 4 of them so i presume it obviously spreads the load !! Sorry for the silly question but better to be safe than sorry. watch out for the next insallment of silly questions !!

Cheers all

paul
