Hi all, Over the weekend i checked the vans tyre pressures and checked for any cracking on the tread or sidewell, I found surface cracks on the treads and noticed that the side had started to graze. Should these tyres be replaced as they are only 5 years old, I don't want to risk blowing out (we have tyron bands fitted). Should they be replaced?

Are the cracks ON the tread, on IN the tread? Either way, I'd not be happy about using them, but cracks on top of the thread might be marginally safer than cracks between the treads.
They are 5 years old so are coming towards the end of safe life. If you can see cracks on the tread are there any dwon in the base of the treads? I would be thinking of changing them for new tyres for the start of the season. Tyrons may help in the case ofa blow out but they dont prevent the inconvenience. I use tyres designed for light commercial vehicles but stil change them at 6 years old even if there are no signs of any cracking, as you cannot see within the tyre itself and for most commercial vehicles the tyres will have been changed well before they exhibit signs of ageing.

Change mine every five years regardless, better to be safe than sorry and with those cracks I'm with WC get shot of them.
You could leave them on until you have your first outing this year, and when you change over also check the dates on the tyre they could be fairly old before you use them.

Hi all, thanks for the replies I've decided that they are far too dangerous I don't want to risk a blow out and put other road users at risk, I've just ordered 2 from Etyres which are fitting them on Friday.

Was the van actually made in 2010? Don't forget around 2008 onwards there was something called a recession which led to stocks building up and hanging around for a long while. I think the first thing to check is the manufacture date of the van. Some dealers were encouraged to take in stock just like pre-reg cars which could have been 2010 model lines but made in the later half of 2009.
The manufacture date digit on the window is 09, but the dealer said it was a 2010 model. I have looked at the date on the tyres it reads 4109 which is the 41st week of 2009.otherclive said:
