For various reasons we have not used our caravan for well over a year now of which that time its been in storage. The tyres have been on all that time and the van has not been moved once, so is it advisable to change the tyres before we start taking the van out again or would these existing tyres be ok. I think I heard from somewhere along the line that they can warp if stood still for a long time. Also is there anything else I should bear in mind before towing my caravan again. The van is only 4 years old. Thanks.

Hi Paul,

Unsure on the tyres but personally I would put the van in for at least a chassis service. Mainly to check brakes, wheel bearings etc. Don't imagine too much can have gone amiss with electrics and gas though a full service would check that. You certainly need to run something through the water system to sterilise it. Probably best to change the filter.

If you have a battery on board then unless it has been maintained you may need to replace it. Trying to re-charge a dead leisure can be dangerous.

I'm sure others will remember more. Hope it goes Well

Paul,

Re your caravan tyres. The recommendation is that caravan tyres should be replaced after 5 or 6 years. You say your van is 4 years old but it is possible your tyres could be quite a bit older than that. There is a way of checking that from information on the side wall of your tyres. If you check the website of some of the tyre suppliers it will show you how its done. Basically somewhere on the tyre there will be a set of four numbers e.g 4602 this would mean that tyre was manufactured on week 46 of year 2002.

Its possible your tyres might be near time for replacement anyway and would give you peace of mind that your tyres were o.k.

Hi Paul,

Notice I only said you 'may' need to change the battery. If it wasn't too old before it may be possible to top it up and re-charge. Depends on condition.

Good Luck

Since my last post regarding this I have done a bit of reading up on batteries. On the sites that I have been on they say if the battery has been fully discharged it will be difficult in getting it back to a fully charged state and that the battery may be damaged. Also it recommends that if I need to charge a Leisure battery I will have to purchase a Leisure battery charger as using a normal charger will not be the right thing to do. I think maybe the best thing for me to do is buy a new battery to be on the safe side. Looking on the web the prices vary from
