I'm replacing my 'van tyres soon and the previous owner had Tyron bands fitted. Are they reusable? Are they a good safety feature? I don't hear much about them these days, have they gone "out of fashion"?

I know I'll have scores of people down on me like a ton of bricks, claiming that Tyron bands were the only thing that stopped their caravan from rolling over when they had a blow-out, but I'll stick my neck out all the same that I think they are a rather crude solution in this day and age. I think you'd be better off with modern run-flat tyres if you really feel you need that sort of protection - probably cheaper, too.

If Tyrons are fitted then it makes sense to re-use them as YES they are re-usable but some of the smaller tyre depots don't like them because without the special equipement they are a bu**er to remove and refit.

I would advise that you are present during the tyre replacement to insure that they are actually reinstalled.

Yes they are "a major contribution to road safety" (do you remember who first said that) although Lutz is right in saying that they are now a bit crude.

For info about them, all you need to do is Google Tyron Bands.

Try Q.Fit, they had an offer on when we where in the NEC, they came out and fitted the tyres yo the van. If I remember right you might even qualify for an insurance discount. Also ask them for a discount if your in the caravan club, I think this was also another selling point.

I had my Tyrons removed at Lodge Tyres locally.

2 alloy wheels and one steel wheel

The caravan dealer refitted them on the new van F O C

Run flat tyres sound a good idea but sourcing them in the right size and rating for a caravan could be less than easy.

Ron,

If you already have Tyron bands, then get them refitted - they are an OK safety feature, but I totally agree with Lutz - there are better solutions

The special tool is an allen (hexagonal) key, might be a good idea to make sure you carry one (of the correct size) in the caravan tool-kit, then if you have a puncture in, say, France you can have the Tyron band removed without the tyre fitter wrecking it.

And Tyron bands are not a reason to exclude checking the caravan tyres for damage, nails in the tread, or incorrect tyre pressure

Thanks everyone for your help, I'll probably retain them if I can find a tyre fitter to do it. My local National Tyres depot doesn't deal with Tyrons any more.

If you are in the Midlands you could contact BMTR they fitted mine.

Other than an Allan key which is supplied with new bands to be retained by the user the fitter should have an attachment to the fitting machine which holds the tyre low on the rim so that the band can be assembled and fitted.

Hi Ron,

I have Tyron bands fitted on my van. I am changing it in the next 2 months, however the dealer doesn't fit them but advised replacing them as although the wheels are the same size there may be a difference in the rim and the old bands may not fit.

On the question of fitting Kwik-Fit advertise a home fitting service but I haven't got round to contacting them yet.

William
