Having been on another Forum talking about turbo failure and as these people are more solo type i wonder whether those who tug have had this disaster happen.

One of the reasons I got rid of my 1.9TDi Audi Avant Quattro at 72,000 miles, was the comment that the turbos on these engines could fail at any time from 80,000 miles onwards and that mine was "showing signs of imminent failure".Possibly this related to the black smoke apparently pouring out of my exhaust under normal acceleration.Only 5000 miles of the total were spent towing, however I was also told that wear wise towing miles count double!

The prospect of this repair on top of the already replaced clutch, dampers and rear coils at 65,000 miles was too much to bear, especially as to get through next years MOT I was told that I would need new pads, discs and front and rear suspension bushes.

The hidden costs of caravanning?

The turbo on my MK5 2.0 TDi Golf 'appeared' to fail after 14,000 miles, and a new one was fitted under warranty. After 34,000 miles it appeared to be playing up again (going into 'limp mode' when pulling hard under load). It was suggested that the Particulate Filter was becoming blocked as this can be similar to the first 'failure', it ran perfectly solo.

So I've part-exed it for a Tiguan, which tells you to 'blow out' the Particulate Filter every so often by driving hard in low gears for 20 mins on a motorway!

Try 'Googling' for Particulate Filter.

I must admit that this is a new one on me and given that some of the fleet cars we have are run until 200,000 miles we have only ever required 2 replacement turbos and one of those was at 170,000 miles.

My own current car is a Galaxay with 165,000 on the clock at 4 years old and I reckon it is going better than ever.

I do wonder with these turbo diesels though how many people realise how long they take to warm up the oil (20 miles) and then you see them pulling into a motorway service station and just switching off and jumping out of the car.

My local dealer services taxi's and he said that he replaced one turbo in November and another in now(dec). One tech guy commented that 54k was "going good" for a turbo on the 2.0 140 bhp A5 series. I have done 30000 miles and towed 6000m with the dsg box having the 2.0 engine and am keeping my fingures crossed. So it seems so far that there is only a small number of tuggers who have encounterd tubo failure, where as solo guys have many, but then again us tuggers are in the minority compared with rest of owners of this make.

I agree with Slowcoach that turbo life can be shortened considerably by just switching off when the engine is hot. When towing, or after fast driving ( ie above 60mph) my Sorento handbook advsies letting it tickover for 2 minutes before switching off. I also use fully synthetic oil ( Total Quartz 9000 at
