Hi all, After having a full service, new tyres etc. back in October, it seems my 90,000 mile estate has a cracked cylinder head. Merry Christmas I thought as the mechanic explained that the car was misfiring due to number 4 cylinder being filled with anti-freeze. With a repair quote of "anything between £700 and £2000" I'm afraid that another loan has to be had, though I would dearly have loved to have squeezed another 40,000 miles out of this car. So with an absolute maximum of £11000 on the cards to include towbar fitting, I am considering 3 cars. Firstly, a Mondeo TDCI 2 litre 130. Secondly, a Skoda Octavia (haven't researched diesel range yet.) Lastly, another Vectra, probably the 1.9 diesel. With that sort of money I would hope that I could get a fairly newish car with 15,000 on the clock. What do you think of my selection and are there others I should consider bearing in mind my budget and the fact I want a diesel. Oh yes, my present 'van is about 1250Kgs. fully laden. Merry Christmas, George.

Hi, George,

What part of the world are you from?

I`ve had experience of a good Company in West Yorks, currently have a Mondeo 130 TD `Edge` (latest spec) `56 reg, 1400 miles at less than 11 grand. A hell of a lot of car for that money.

That quote sounds excessive to me. Google for reconditioned cylinder heads, and see what specialist firms there are in your area - and bear in mind that a car with a dud engine has very little value.

Personally, I would guess that you ought to be able to get one fitted for less than

Hi everyone, thanks for all the useful information. I decided against getting the Vectra repaired and placed it in part ex against a Mondeo Zetec TDCI 130. It's an 06 plate with 14000 on the clock. It was just under
