Hi,

I would most certainly say yes, most caravans have them fitted as standard and you change them as required or every season dependent on use. What type of caravan do you have, how old is it?

I did not think many caravans any longer fit these 'filters'. If you are keeping your water system clean, and you use a potable water supply when on site, there is, I think, no need for these things. Unless they are changed at the correct intervals they could harbour bugs etc., and the instructions were very vague about filter changes. At the most I think that they would only prevent minute solids from getting by - and if you are connected to a good supply the local water authority has a duty to see that whatever is in the drinking water supply will not do you harm. ( I am not getting into the chlorine argument..!) If there was anything that was going to do you harm in the water, it would take alot more than one of these gadgets to stop it. If you want filtered water, invest in a small Brita system - or drink beer!!

We use the Filtapac Econoflow 2000 which can be refilled annually - many filters can only be used for 30 days use.

Once you've changed your first filter and looked at the old one, you'll realise exactly why you need one!

We actually use two filters - one filters ALL incoming water - the other acts as a secondary filter on the kitchen cold supply only.

If you only fit one filter, put in the kitchen cold supply but then you're washing, cleaning your teeth and washing up in unfiltered water.

Stephen,

They were popular a few years ago, but less so now. Why?

Well a simple filter that removes grit from the water supply might be a good idea - there are areas of the country that extract water from sandstone aquifers - and these "suffer" from minute pieces of grit in the water.

If you lived in a hard water area - then maybe a Brita filter function in the filter would be nice.

And if your water supply came from a reservoir, then a charcoal filter might be nice too - it would adsorb organic pollutants (broken up bits of leaf, etc.)

All great - but then the filter manufacturers noticed that the filter provides a concentration of all the debris in one place - and they are great places for bugs to grow. And the bugs don't wait for the filter to reach it's sell by date - they grow from day one.

The step to combat bug growth was to add metallic Silver as a bactericide, but as an engineer and scientist I've got my doubts about how efficient that is.

So I'd say - no - adding a filter causes different problems to those it was designed to solve. As long as you keep the water supply washed out, clean, and regularly sterilised - you should be fine.

We have a filter but only insert foam inserts to prevent grit getting in to the system. All the water that is consumed comes from the local supermarket so n o ill effects there.
