I have the chance of purchasing a one owner vehicle in immaculate condition and full service history. It is a 1996 top of the range model with all the bells fitted and just over 100,000 miles on the clock. Are they any good as a tow car, what would be a reasonable price for the vehicle and are there any problems to be aware of?

Hi Colin,

I thought I knew the Volvo range quite well, but I am unfamiliar with the 950. However I bought a 940 with 102,000 miles on the clock and spent 7 years taking it up to 205,000 - towing much of the time. A great car.

Hi Colin.Although I have had two Volvo cars:- an 850 2.5litre 5cyl 10valve CD Auto Excellent Car & now my V70 20valve T5 CD Auto, awesome when woken up; like any other when let to tick along.I have not had the 9series but I believe they are an excellent tow car(especially the Turbo Diesel Model, there was also a 3ltr petrol version)but might need the rear stiffening a little( Grayson Inserts are very good) but inform your insurance as it is a modification. They are becoming very hard to find, don't let a good one go.I have recently seen One Owner/Full Volvo History cars with 120,000+ go('Sold-Gone')for over a £1500.00.The last year of manufacture was 1996, but there may be an odd very late registered one about; but currently on AutoTrader(National Search) there are 5 (960) Auto Estates. They are longer than the V70 by a fair margin and were very popular with trades people especially joiners. You could get an 8x4 sheet of board material in with ease(plenty of load area out of the caravan).

Colin, volvo didnt make a 940 2.5 petrol.they made 2.0 and 2.3 petrols, and 2.4 diesel in the 940,and 2.5 and 3.0 litre petrols in the 960.they made 2.0. 2.3 and 2.5 petrols and 2.5 diesels in the 850.i have towed with the 940 2.0 and 2.3 petrols and 2.4 diesel.and they were a good tow car.have not towed with a 960 or a 850.as you can probaly tell i used to be a volvo nut.also the 940 960 and v90 were the last of the rear wheel drive cars.the later 850`s v70`s are all front wheel drive except the awd variants of the v70 and xc90
