Thinking of changing my car to a 2008 v70 d5.

Anyone had any experience with this car.

Yes. Mines a 2008 V70 D5 SE Lux manual. I changed from the previous 2005 model. Both superb cars but the earlier 5 speed 163 engine was far more economical than the new 6 speed 185 model. Excellent tow cars indeed.

I've just got back (Tuesday) from 3 weeks in France. On the way over I towed from Roscoff to Biarritz (540 miles) in a day without any trouble.

When ask these sort of questions you will undoubtabley get lots of other cars proposed as alternatives but as far as the V70 is concerned I'm more than happy. Which is why I went for a second one.

On the previous model I would consistantly get 50-55 mpg but I used to have a relatively clear run to and from the office, early morning and late home, with very little traffic. I'd put the cruise control on 60mph and sit back. I also had projects all over the country and did the same.

We relocated our office into the centre of Cardiff and that happened to coincide with the change of car. Much heavier traffic, continuous roadworks and not much chance to use cruise control means it's difficult to do a straight comparison but it seems to be high 30's - low 40's. Also a lot of the projects I'm involved with are local.

I couldn't tell you how they fared towing. I never really bothered to check. Banging down the motorway in France, winding hills to Mid Wales or across Salisbury Plain to the South Coast are all going to give very different results. It does what it does.

Thats not bad i was expecting high 20s low 30s we only get 42mpg out of our current car(Seat altea)so thats not much of a drop.

Going tomorrow to test drive the car ive had my eye on same model

as yours.

Hi Lindsay;Ive had volvos now for a few years my present car S80 D5 saloon version of the V70 is excellent 110,000 miles without a problem tows like a dream and gives me over 40mpg towing cant knock them

Great carlots of toys and it comes with a

built in sat nav.

Can`t wait to pick it up and get away for a few days.

Ours is the lux model comes with built in sat nav ,tv, phone,plus the other toys,Was owned by Lex Leasing good history and well looked after,Have had it two years no trouble;

Hi lindsay I am very envious of you, did you get a good deal? Saving like mad to chop ours in for a V70 but don't think I can stretch to a 2008 model, happy motoring, regards a jealous bloke

Cannot give any personal opinion as my Volvo is petrol, but a while back the Volvo Owners forum suggested around 25 mpg towing was average for the D5. It will of course depend on the size of van on the back and I am sure many owners have different opinions. It is a good tow car though, maybe just do not expect miracles.

Hi Lindsay. i run a 2007 2.4dv70. its a company car and is great to drive and very comfort. i work for the truck and bus of volvo and the new cars are not as good on fuel as the older ones ie- euro3. i do a lot of motorway miles as well as local. avg around 35 miles per gallon. my old euro 3 was around 45-50. i tow a bailey ranger 620/6 and go abroad a lot. when towing we get around 23-24 to the gallon with this v70 with old one we was always knock the door of 30. mines just the standard se but in the company there are a lot boys with the D5 and they all same the same that the power is not as god as the old model but they are nice cars to drive.

you have made a brilliant choice there ive owned 2 v70's 1 petrol & the last 1 a D5 AWD SE. Absoultely brill we used to tow a twin axle bailey senator with it with no trouble returning about 26-30 mpg depending on roads etc.

We changed our caravan last year to a heavier twin axle & so needed a much heavier car. Guess what i went for the XC90 which is also brilliant with all the toys phone sat nav dvd etc.

My caravan has a mtplm of 1900 & travelling at 55mph on motorways which i tend to do it returns 23mpg.Still not bad for the outfit. I would never ever consider any other cars than Volvos & will certainly have another V70 whenever we change caravan for a lighter van.

Hi,

We used to tow a Lunar Lexon with a '53 V70 D5 auto. Never had any mechanical problems with the car and it towed the 'van (1400kg) with ease. Used it regularly to go to the South of France, two adults and the usual caravan gear. We were very happy if we averaged 26 mpg towing, solo the best we ever got was 46 mpg, usually more like 38 mpg on a motorway run. Around town, low 30s. We traded to an E Class estate because the turning circle of the V70 was very poor and there was a paintwork issue which Volvo refused to rectify after the 3yr warranty.

Sadly will be parting with my Sorento in a months time, but will be replacing it with a D5 XC70 geartronic, any comments (good or indifferent to be aware of greatly appreciated) One choice to make is whether to go for a fixed or removable tow bar. A personal choice I know, but I recently had a passing glimpse of a removable bar and it appeared that the Alko stabiliser head was a bit too close for comfort to the car bumper.

Just make sure you get a towbar designed for the XC70, not the V70 as they are of different heights. Also make sure the wiring is done correctly. Even Volvo can make mistakes as they forgot the fridge relay on my set up, until reminded. Also if they do it, it will be a 13 pin set up which is fine.
