The MTPLM of the van you are buying is shown as 1595kg.

What model V70 have you got as there are a lot of variants, if you look in your V5 it will tell you the under Section 4 Item G ( Mass in Service )= kerbweight of your car

I have just seen a figure of 3300lb towing capacity ( 1496kg )

take a look at this link V70 tech-spec

Depending on the model you have the van MTPLM could be heavier than the car

for weight conversion take a look here HERE

The tech spec data sheet that Sproket is referring to shows US models, not cars to European spec. The maximum permissible towload of the European models is 1800kg except for the 2.0T automatic which is 1600kg.

Why is there so much difference in the US / European spec ?

The site is volvoclub.org.uk that the link goes to ?

The Americans have different criteria for determining towloads. Their figures are always lower than ours.

Hello Dwebbie,

We are waiting to take delivery of a Challenger 570. Being new to caravanning I have received great information from this forum, and I am sure more experienced people than I will respond to you.

However for what it is worth here is how came to buy a Kia Sportage Titan, which gives us an 86% towing match. We were directed to the car by Steve, from whom we purchased our 570. We had a test drive and found the car offered excellent value and found some good reviews to confirm our feeling that this was the car for us.

You could also look at the Kia Sorrento, however we thought it too big for our day to day motoring around town, but most people rate it very highly for towing. Whether you are looking at new or secondhand they offer great value for money.

If like me you are new to caravanning I think it important work to the recommended 85% towing match between your vehicle and van. The percentage has come about for good reasons and was recommended by people who have great knowledge.

Good luck and best regards,

George

Hi George, We are relatively new to caravanning, that is why we bought the volvo, at the moment we have a 2 birth avondale. I will now consider a Kia, I had been looking at landrover. Thanks

The 2.5T Volvo has the high performance engine dishing out 210 bhp. It will have the power to pull a van no problem, however, the torque is at the top end of the rev range, so you may be having to go down a gear to keep it moving.

The only downside I can see is that you will hurt a bit on fuel comsumption and I would expect you to get mid to high teens when towing.

If you do decide to go with it then check the suspension is the self levelling type as this makes life much more pleasant when you put 75 kg on the back end.
