Hi all, do any of you tow with a Toureg with the auto box?

We have a twin axle with a 1800kg MTPLM, currently tow with a manual sorento, very pleased with the sorento, but thinking of swapping for a toureg or something similar!

Any comments welcome, thank you in advance.

Andrew & Sally.

Towed in 2004 with an Auto demonstrator with the 2.5 TDi engine.

Lovely car pity about the engine; seriously the 2.5 struggles and is far from refined whilst doing it. Simply the engine is not in tune with an otherwise lovely made and well behaved car. The one I used was even on springs not air suspension but still drove nicely.

I read that the newer 3.0 TDi was a transformation but by then I had purchased a D3 so was no longer in the market. Had a look at the 5.0 but cost of ownership wise was out of my range.

My advice would be to stick with a manual gearbox. I tow with it's sister the Audi Allroad 2.5 Tdi and have just had avery expensive auto gearbox repair. I would disagree with the last message, my allroad is 22o BHP and i've found it a very able tow car towing a twin axle van.

The Audi Allroad is not related to the Toureg.

Audi's Q7 and Porsche's Cayenne share initially development with the Toureg, so they are "step sisters" so to speak. The Allroad was a totally different pedigree with origins in the Syncho and Quattro lineage exploiting viscous torque splitting front to rear.

The Toureg's engine was not used in the Allroad. It was a brand new development, a chain driven camshaft engine shared with the commercial T5. The 3.0 by contrast came from the Phaeton.

I have also used the manual Toureg. A very big problem with that is that it does not use a "handbrake" for parking but a foot parking brake. You have to use the clutch foot to set it, so you must select neutral to put on the parking brake. Whilst this is no problem with the Auto its very difficult with the manual.
