Hi all, can anyone give me advice re: Carver Fanmaster warm air heater. When we come to use the heater it is blowing cold air, so out comes the drawers to get to the reset flap. This is happening just about everytime we want to use it. I mentioned it when we had it serviced in June and was told nothing could be found wrong with it. We did notice when it first happened like a dust burning smell when turning it off, then cold air again when turning back on. The caravan is a 1994 Sterling Emerald Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello Geof,

The smell of burning dust is not all that uncommon when it is first turned on after a long winter shutdown, but it could also be a pointer to a possible cause for the over heat switch tripping.

The fan can be become quite occluded with dust, and that will restrict the air flow through the unit. Ultimately, the air flow may drop so low that there insufficient to take all the heat away from the heating element. The result can be that it runs and just keeps the thermal switch happy, but as soon as the fan stops, the thermal mass of the element continues to raise the element surface temperature just enough to cause the trip to operate.

In some installations it is possible to remove the fan unit from the back of the heater so it can be cleaned with care. However in some installations it is necessary to remove the whole heater, in which case the job must be referred to a person who is competent to work on gas appliances.
