Water pump not working and gets very hot!

I took my van out of storage yesterday in readiness for the new season and filled up the inboard tank.I switched the water pump on and it didn't work.

Changed both the switch and fuse (which was ok but a bit corroded) and still nothing.

Carried on with another job and could sense a slight burning smell.Poked my head under the sink and the shureflow pump was red-hot and burnt my finger.

All the wiring is OK as I traced it all back to the battery.

The van is old being 1981 so can I assume the pump has seized? It has always been noisy when operating but worked until the end of last season.

Hi Simon,

Your diagnosis of a seized pump sounds right. And if the motor got that hot, it's really seized now...

Replacement with a pump of identical flow and pressure rating is the way forward...

Hi Simon,

Have had exactly the same problem, and agree with your conclusions. I have a brand new Shurflo pump (bought to replace mine, but changed van instead) which I am sure we could come to an agreement on if you are interested.

I would be interested assuming that it has the same output capacities as mine.

I will check in the morning although anything around 30psi should be OK.

Hi Simon,

Mine is a model series 2088/2090 which replaced the 200 series and says 'pressure setting 40psi.' and 'open flow 10.6 l/min'

If that helps.

Whilst the diagnoses is most probably correct its worth opening it up to see if anything is obviously wrong. Something as simple as a stuck discharge valve will hydraulically lock the pump and give the same results. If the pump is old then there is a real possibility a valve could stick against its seal during a lay-up period. Worth a look for something as simple as this before spending a fair bit of money.

Right then....

The pump is a Shurflo Model No.1021 manufactured on 6/2/1981 and the only figures are imperial.

12v DC ,4.5amps

1.3 US Gal/Min, 1.1 IMP Gal/Min which I equate to approx 5 Lit/Min.

There is no PSI rating to be found...

Hi Simon,

Mine is rated at 8amp. so with the pressure rating sounds as if it is capable of pushing twice the volume of water. I leave the decision to you if you want to take it further.
