I've just emptied all the bits and pieces from the van to prep it for winter, and just from interest I decided to weight it all.
I was a bit surprised at the results,,my van has a load allowance of 113Kg and just the bits came to nearly 40Kg.
It's quite surprising just how much a little bit in each drawer or cupboard comes to.

How right you are ! Now you have the problem about which bits to return and which to store/ditch. Be aware that the well known Law (Murphy's or something more earthy) will unfailingly apply to those bits you put in the latter group.

Having had bad experience with the (supplied) caravan jack many years ago, I took to carrying my trolley jack. 14 years later I went through the same weighing exercise and next trip it stayed home. Need I go on ? The replacement lightweight bottle jack proved too tall to go under the chassis until I excavated the blacktop of the French minor road.....

You don't say into which of the HIs and Hers categories your load fell, but again you will find that His are less essential than hers.

On behalf of the fairer (definitely) and gentler (probably not) sex can I just say that it is HIMSELF that loads c**p on the van, "in case we need it". There are more screwdrivers and wrenches on the van than in the garage at home.

Years ago I did that on our old Ace Globetrotter - the payload allowance was 150kg - when I totalled everything it was over 200 - that's before adding any food, clothes etc. I set up an Excel spreadsheet which has evolved to this day to keep track of most things and we're just about ok.

That's why I cringe when I hear someone trying to justify a caravan that's too big for the car by "we won't load it fully" - it won't ever happen, not on British caravans.

It might on the occasional continental caravan where the weight upgrade is several 100 kg but usually involves a different axle.

I prefer my wrenches and screw drivers any day to the curlers hairdryers and array of brushes.

My motto is Sir Sproket gets away with it so why shouldn't I  :p B)

I think my daughtersmake up and hair stuff counts for a lot of the weight, as do Sir F's tools...and bikes...and rope swings...frisbees...
We are looking at leaving the on board dining table at home and getting a lighter one, similarly we are asking for Xmas cash to buy four lightweight dining/ reclining chairs as the old ones are rusty.
As for 'hers'; 1 or 2 books and all the food needed seem to be the quota!

Every time we empty a caravan when replacing it we find masses of bits we had forgotten about and they are all dead weight.
