The commercial site in West Bay is what you'd expect, it looked a bit of a booze and bingo place when we walked round the town a couple of years back.
The beach is shingle but only a short walk from the West Bay site and the small harbour extends back toward the shops etc, it's a nice enough place but quite busy.

It depends what you want from a camp site, I suppose. The one at West Bay is a big all-singing all-dancing site with all the facilities, including pool, clubhouse, etc. And it's just feet away from the beach. Not our cup of tea, but each to their own. We haven't actually stayed there but have visited the area lots of times, as MIL lives there. Apparently there's good fishing in the harbour. As Parksy said, it's a popular area and does get extremely busy during holiday times.

We used to stay at Freshwater Beach Holiday Park which is not far from West Bay. This site can get very busy in the main holiday periods but at other times is much quieter. We certainly prefered staying at freshwater rather than West Bay. It has its own beach but not good for young children. Go on their web site to see what they have got. West Bay itself is quite nice to visit as are many other coastal towns in this part of Dorset.

west bay is quite nice, especially in the evening, the beach is shingle and very steep. If you watch River Cottage , Hugh F W fishing boat , Dawn Mist operates from West Bay, and the skipper does a good 4 hour deep sea trip. Also its not too far the R C canteen which is quiet reasonably priced.

This year we stayed at a site on the outskirts of Charmoutrh- Wood Farm. Very clean and quiet and safe for young children.

West Bay........ahhh......memories are flooding back again

When i was younger(about 13)my parents always took me to West Bay.
This was before the site was taken over by Haven and we used to stay in the same static caravan every year for about 8 years.
I used to go down to the entrance of the site and on the left were some rowing boats for hire(across the bridge from the main harbour).
The old guy who owned them was called Doug and I used to help him clean them and make sure they were ready for hire to customers.
At the entrance to the campsite were a couple of small shops selling dairy products etc..
I also spent many a happy hour out on the end of the pier fishing for mackerel with my dad until after dark.
There also used to be a funfair across the little footbridge where the cafe was and spent many a happy hour watching the rides go round.
There wasnt a lot to spend your money on in West Bay in those days(I think thats why mum and dad used to take me there..ha ha)
Although the two beaches either side of the pier are not child friendly(very steep) it was great to sit and throw pebbles into the sea and climb the steep hill to the left.
Ahhh....fond memories

Hello
We stayed at West Bay a couple of years ago.
The only thing that let it doen was the size of the pool it was a bit small.
The site is tiered and can be hard to reverse your caravan onto the pitch, luckly we had some helpers.
West Bay itself is one of the nicest places I have been. The coastline is fantastic.
We would definitely go again.
