Hi Peter

German built caravans are reputed to have the best build quality but they are expensive and tend to lack the equipment fitted to most British built caravans. You pay your money and take your choice.

If you are looking for a used caravan then the condition of the individual caravan which suits your requirements is paramount.

There are a few tips Here which might help and the Camping & Caravanning Club offers advice to new caravanners

Not all German caravans can lay claim to be top quality caravans, although none are bad. Hobby, for instance, is a pretty run-of-the-mill make. Hymer and Dethleffs have a better reputation.

We live not too far from where Hymers are sold. Having had a good look around them, I think it's about time people took off their rose coloured glasses. They are not all that they are cracked up to be (and I'm sure the same applies to all the different makes). Quite honestly, if you get a good caravan from a Manufacturer who might not have the best of reputations, you'll be pleased. At the same time, if you get a lemon from a manufacturer who has a good reputation, you won't. Building caravans (whichever Country) seems to be a very hit and miss affair. One of the most important things you need is a good Dealer. I found one who looks after me, and although he's the best part of 60 miles away, I've had five new caravans from him.

It's mainly down to personal taste, but after 40+ years of caravanning I now have Burstner and happily live with the various foibles (like no wiring diagram) for the build quality - I can fix most other things but not that.

It is heavy but not that much more than the equivalent fixed bed UK built van, the seating is a bit on the hard side (but the bed superb) and although i would like an end-washroom fixed bed van i have yet to see anything which tells me to swap.

Look at as many as you can, decide what suits you and what doesn't, insist on seeing all the service history.
