What to tow with a Mini

I couldn't find a figure for the max. towload of the petrol Mini, only of the diesel, and that's 650kg. Assuming the same figure applies to the petrol, too, you would be pushed to find any caravan that falls below that figure. Even the smallest Eriba, the Puck, is rated at 700kg. I think you'd have to resign yourself to a folding caravan if you want to tow with a Mini.

Hi Angela,

Slight disagreement with Lutz over the weights of an Eriba Puck.

The "empty" weight (MRO) of a new Puck is 500 kg, with a maximum payload of 150 kg. And my guess is that you would fit about 50 kg of stuff in a Puck.

If you buy a classic Puck - with the external gas bottle pod - these are 50 kg lighter. And if you can find a Puck Export - then these are lighter still.

We know of several people who tow a Puck with a Toyota Yaris and Mercedes A-Class, shouldn't be a problem - weight ratio between Mini and Puck should be around 50%. Well inside the 85% guidelines for a newbie caravan owner.

Hi Lutz,

Agree that the Puck 120 and Puck 120 GT have a maximum weight (MTPLM) of 700 kg, but the standard Puck - that's 650 kg and the preface lift Puck is 550 kg.

I've checked the technical documents in Brenda's Mini - and it looks like the Mini One, Mini One D and Mini Cooper all have a maximum braked load of 650 kg. And the central exhaust on the Cooper S makes towing impossible.

Interestingly the maximum noseweight on the Mini towbar is 75 kg - this would be a very unusual load to tow.

So I still think a Puck is OK - as long as you don't use the full payload - and when we had a Puck we struggled to put anything like 50 or 60 kg inside.

Another caravan you might wish to consider is the "Freedom" brand. You will find a detailed account of these in this months Practical Caravan (site sponsors) magazine. They are still borderline where towing weights are considered, but with carefull loading they could be used.

Cheap too......
