Hello lovely forumites - I was just wondering after how many years of caravanning do you stop purchasing things for the van??? I made the fatal mistake of suggesting a trip out to our local caravan dealer in Gloucester on Sunday - the skies were blue, the sun was shining and it WASN'T RAINING! We came home with a small lightweight plastic table (to go with the 2 aluminium folding tables we have already), a bright pink Muggi (I need to be able to carry mugs of tea and coffee without them sliding around on the tray previously purchased for said purpose, and it was in the sale) and a rather lovely waterproof backed fleecy carpet for our 4th awning purchased in 2 years of caravanning - yes OH is well on the way to having an awning for every day of the week at the moment! The carpet was £80 down to £21.97 in Go Outdoors so we bought my parents one too. We also managed to buy 2 tiny non stick frying pans just perfect for frying eggs using the Cadac (bye bye stainless steel rings bought for said purpose last year) and a 5 litre water container with it's own tap so that I don't flood the surfaces in the van trying to fill up the kettle with a 2 litre squash bottle anymore. Happy days ... OH rather hopefully suggested we go through the contents of the van one weekend very soon as, "there is stuff in the cupboards that we just don't use anymore" ... hee hee little does he know that I've now started on my beloved list writing of "stuff to put in the cupboards to fill them up after OH has emptied them" as the much awaited countdown begins to our first outing in March!!!! Happy, happy days.

Oh ... and he's very lucky we can't afford a new caravan as I was rather taken with the new Swift Challenger island bed on a single axle .... oh well, back to the Lottery Ticket

We live 10 minutes from out local caravan dealer and have to go past them to get anywhere
They have a cafe which we use a lot and of course have to visit the shop. The cup of tea or lunch in the cafe always ends up costing money as there is always something that we did not know we needed and end up buying iit n the shop

Trouble is going to the caravan shop and buying things for the van is the next best thing when you can't go out in the van. There should be a support group.
My name is Mel and I'm addicted to caravanning.

(BTW lisa have you seen the woosie meet in sept? Are you coming along?)

Hi Mel - we ought to start a Support Group!!! No I haven't seen any info on the Woosie meet but suspect if it's not in the school holidays we won't be able to come as can't take time off during term time and if it's a weekend and more than 20 miles away it's beyond us unfortunately due to time constraints/fuel costs etc.

. One day we hope to be able to come along!

Every time you buy an item, no matter how small, over time you are adding weight to the caravan and may exceed the MTPLM as all the little things add up to one big thing!

When last did any of you go to the weigh bridge and weigh the caravan?

After 28 years we still buy odds and ends. Last thing was to update the mirrors to the larger Aero type.

Surfer, surfer, surfer. You just don't understand this shopping thing.

We don't necessarily put all this stuff in the van. There is circulation as we move it around; choose which bits are going on this trip, store them in the garage, enjoy looking at them. I have some things (like an insulated aquaroll cover) that have so far, never made it into the van. The point is the aquisition, not the use.

My sentiments exactly Mel ... my OH is very sensible and will ensure that we are not overloaded etc. and looks after the 'technical' side of things ... I do the interesting things like make lists, buy items and 'decorate' the caravan when we are away. We were looking at a site just 9 miles from us yesterday which would be ideal for a weekend away. It was quite well occupied as it's a year-round site and as we were looking, we both commented that the feeling of excitement was bubbling away in anticipation of our first outing this year. We are now hoping to go the weekend of 7th March if the ground dries up a bit!

Lisa, why wait for the ground to dry ? Half the fun is getting stuck in the mud and the squelch underfoot as you trundle to the showers.
At least that is what my family tell me.

Recently bought the caravan a couple of prezzies, new stainless steel pigtail with the easy turn wheel and then i bought 15.o metre's
of Armoured electric cable and a weatherproof socket to be fitted by electrician this weekend, and now I only need a 1.0m lead to plug him in.

Fair enough, but when last did you take the caravan onto a weigh bridge to be weighed?

Ah but then I'd need to buy Hunter Wellies and they're not cheap to squelch in the mud ... more cost!!!! Seriously, since the transfer box went on the Sorento last May, our car is now in permanent 4wd so not sure OH would be happy about driving in very wet and muddy conditions as we may get stuck!
