Where are they all?

Since this new re-vamped site came into being, we seem to have lost a lot of the "old stagers". Where have they gone? Perhaps they have just changed their names?

Well I've had a few months off and just come back to see if everyone was just as back biting and grumpy as they were, so far they don't seem to be so maybe they are all the ones that have left!!!!

I was away for 3 weeks when they changed the site. When i tried to get on to the site it had all changed and i had to re log on. Not being good with technical things to do with the computer it kept saying wrong entry, too many dots, not enough numbers and so on , in the end i gave up. For me the instructions on how to log on were not made clear enough in simple explained stages. Were back now , so all is well again.

It would be good if we could view a members list. I think some people have changed their username too which is confusing (well, I find it confusing).

I don't think I recall moaning about the old forum but I think I actually do prefer the old format.

So do I

The earlier problems with the log in appear to have been sorted out now and the forum is running ok and not slow. It may take time for those who went elsewhere because of problems to use this forum again, let's hope that they give it another try.
I have to say that there are quite a few new members who join, perhaps if one or two more of us replied to their introductory posts and made them feel welcome they might stick around so that they eventually became 'old stagers'.

It amazes me that when someone asked a reasonably straightforward question about snaking the topic was hijacked to the point where there have been 118 replies so far, most of which bear little relevance to the original question.
A newbie trying to introduce themselves to other forum members is very lucky indeed if they get six replies

That's a very good point Parksy, I must try to make more of an effort to welcome newbies. I too find all these new names confusing, especially the ones with tons of numbers after their name (whose idea was that? Sack them!! hehe

). It's hard to know sometimes whether you're talking to a newbie or someone who's been around for yonks. Perhaps we should have a thread saying who we are now and who we used to be...........? *Sue skips off to ChitChat to start one up*

A members join date is shown under their name. It confuses me when they post and I don't recognise the users name but it says they've been a member for (in some cases), years. So I haven't got a clue who they used to be.

I think upto six replies on a new members introductory post is not bad. As long as the moderators welcome them, it's a good start.

The member's joining date is not necessarily the date they joined, it can be the date they changed their e-mail address. I've been posting for a couple of years but my "joining date" is less than a year ago.

Up to six replies wouldn't be too bad I'd agree. More often than not there are one or at best two replies, naturally I reply to welcome newbies when I'm not away in the caravan but where is everybody else?
On most other caravan forums new members are made to feel very welcome but for some strange reason that doesn't seem to happen on this forum.

If we all spent as much time and effort in welcoming newbies as we do in complaining about the new forum, wondering 'where everybody has gone' and going on about things being quiet this forum would be busy and vibrant for most of the time because the aforementioned newbies would feel welcome and be encouraged to post comments.

Having been a member since the original forum was created, I find the change in the new format quite irritating, before when logging in, All the latest inputs where at the top of the forum, now you have to traul through all the sections to see whether anybody has responded to a query or general advise .

The times and dates at the side of topic headings gives a good idea of when a topic is active on that particular section. After you've opened that section the times and dates appear against each topic so it's easy to see which threads are active and which are stagnant. It would be much better if there was a 'new posts' icon though.
With the old format new posts did appear at the top of the forum but quite often they disappeared off the end of the forum page when things were busy. This often led to outraged members asking why the moderators had deleted their post when we hadn't
smiley-cry.gif

They just didn't look at the previous pages.
Another point in favour of the new system is that posts remain visible for longer periods of time, on the old forum when they went it could be difficult to find them again.

Thanks Mel, you were one of the few welcoming replies that I mentioned.

I tried to get admin to move the New Members section near to the top of the forum page where members might be more inclined to respond to it. Its at or near to the top on every caravan forum except this one but my pleas seem to have fallen on stony ground.

As usual - no reply

hi all.
while #i do understand where parksy is comming from the plain truth is the new forum is a bit sterile. time was when there was a bit of banter between posters to make it interesting.
these days it seems full of questions (mostly the same ones) from posters you have never heard of who either dont respond or dont take a active part on the forum untill posting another question.
in other words boring like crossroads used to be remember benny going to fetch a spanner and then dissapering for 18 months
well a lot of the old members are like benny "awayl looking in their toolboxes"
