Where do you stow your awning when travelling

In the past, I've always stowed the awning and poles in the loo. I'm loath to do this in the new van. Where is the best place in the van, or should it go in the car?

We lay ours on the caravan floor, over the axle. A full awning can weigh quite a lot, especially if you have to take it down wet. If your loo is at the rear of the caravan, it's not a good idea to carry any heavy stuff there, as it could cause the van to snake.

Alan, we now put ours in the roof box. Seems to be the best combination for us. Any where in the van and it is in the way (even ignoring the potential damage). In the boot is 2nd best for us but that puts a lot of extra weight over the rear axle. We try and put all heavy items in the boot/car, as far forward as possible to assist the car/van weight. In the roof box seems to be the best position for the weight.

Poles and awning in the boot.

I've got a Alhambra so they go lengthwise across the width of the car behind the second row of seats.

As the car is designed as a 7 seater, and there are only three of us, I don't worry about axle load.

This gives me more options for more bulky but not necessarily heavy items in the van such as bikes.

We put ours in the back of the estate car, along with all the other bulky/heavy gear, seats folded down, Just like to keep the car as heavy as possible & the van as light as possible.

Only works coz there's only 2 of us, but hey, it works for us.

We keep ours in the garden shed!

Trying to sell it just now and were going to buy one of these Ultima lightweight awnings. Less weight and less hassle. ( I hope!)

Hi,

it goes behind the front seats of the car, along with the food boxes, toolbags etc. Mustn't compomise the dog's travelling space in any way.

Made the mistake of taking the mother-in-law away a few years ago (under severe duress!) and found her gob was an ideal receptacle for the awning, poles, curtains, goundsheet and pegs.

Also seemed to make the journey quieter.

I like it, but how did you feel as she drove your new outfit over the cliff?

Like Other Clive, on the floor behind the driver, front passenger seat. Only two of us except when we take our grandson and his feet arn't long enough yet to cause discomfort. Again dogs in the back so no room there. My porch awning with pole weights 20kg and a full awning near 40kg so best place in the van is over th axle on the foor. Definitely would not put it any where else.

Like rob_jax, we used to use ours, to get the nose weight correct in the van. I was the ideal thing to use, most of it is padded when tucked away, it was of a decent weight and that weight was low down in the chassis.

Never strayed too far from the axle line though.

Awning goes in the car boot alongside the bulk alcohol supplies, poles go on the parcel shelf behind the rear headrests. This improves the actual towing ratio and means we can use the caravan with ease during stops or on-site if we don't erect the awning straight away.

Awning and poles get stored in the garage at home so we don't clutter up the caravan even then.
