Trying to find a reliable site to check the tow capacity/kerb weight of my toyota avensis estate, but can't seem to find a website to do so.The log book has many weights but none seem to be the appropriate ones!

Any ideas?

Hello Alison,

The kerbweight is a rather meaningless figure, as the actual kerbweight will vary depending on what extras have been fitted. even the type of paint has an impact on the weight of the car, so it is unlikely that any published figure will accurately represent your particular car.

It has little significance when it comes down to towing. You need to be aware of maximum weights for both the car and the caravan.

The kerbweight is only of significance if you have re restricted driving license (Class B only).

If you are concerned about the 85% recommendation, please remember it is only a guideline. For novice towers always try to keep the weight of the caravan as low as possible.

If you wish to pursue the kerbweight, then please only use information from your handbook, or the dealer or manufacturer. Information from other sources may not be accurate.

The Avensis is one of those cars where, depending on its specification, the maximum permissible towload (1300kg) can actually be less than 85% of the kerbweight. Therefore, kerbweight is not only meaningless but also totally misleading when trying to determine what you may tow.

Thanks for your replies.

So where is it that I can find the reliable 'numbers' for my car?

Is there a plate on it somewhere?

The log book shows a label which I have found -the label says GVM = 1830 ?

GVM is Gross Vehicle Mass, i.e. the maximum that the car may weigh. You should also find another figure with the designation GTW or GTM, which is Gross Train Weight (or Mass), which is the maximum that car plus caravan together may weigh. If you subtract the one from the other, that will give you the maximum that you may tow if the car is fully laden. In some cases you may tow more if the car is not fully laden (for example, most Renaults are like that), but usually the towing limit is not variable.
