Were looking at going to fort william in july for 10 nights or so. we have a short list but can't decide - travelling with 6 & 8 year old. As long there's somewhere for kids to play onsite away from caravans and somewhere for them to ride bikes = happy mum & dad

Hi
Try bunree CC Site , has play area for the young folk and is right on the loch shores with excellent views. Also a fish & chip van visits twice a week. Site is around 8 miles from Fort William.

Dougie forgot to warn you about the midges although you'll get them anywhere in that area

Nice views though especially if you get a pitch overlooking the loch. Be aware though that lochside pitches cannot erect awnings.
Almost opposite the entrance to the site there is walk with marked paths although I've never done this.
From this site you can catch the Corran ferry, drive down to Lochaline and catch the ferry over to Mull to see the sea eagles and Tobermory (Ballamory from the kids TV programme).
The steam loco hauled train from Fort William to Mallaig would get the kids excited. It travels over Glenfinnan viaduct which was used in Harry Potter.

I can really recommend the Glen Nevis Campsite. We have stayed there several times when the kids were young. It is only a couple of miles to the centre of Fort William where there is a great swimming pool with flume among other things. There are lots of things to do and see in the area.
The campsite facilities are all well kept and the whole site is run on a very proffesional level. There is a childrens play area onsite and a great resturant (child friendly) 5 mins walk from the campsite.
Although Bunree campsite is also a lovely site we found it a little too far out of town for our needs (shopping, swimming pool, etc). Check out www.glen-nevis.co.uk.
Hope you enjoy

hi just to add a note about bunree we stayed there last year for several days
i can honestly say it was superb there is a play area for the younger ones which i did`nt sample !!!!!! i might add
the walks mentioned opposite the site are very nice they go up in to the woods and are really splendid one word of warning the one walk is very tough for the first half but levels out in to a nice stroll along the top of the tree line !!
the site itself is very good usuall CC standards as already mentioned you can not pitch a awning on the front pitches but the second row is still really nice as the pitches are stagger`d so you look between units
hope all the info helps

On the midge thing get some Avon Skin So Soft. The midges hate it and does seem to ward them off. All the campsites in Scotland also sell a small "roll on" bite soother for about £3.00. It works well but it's best to avoid being bitten in the first place
I also thought only fair skinned blondes go bitten. Oh how wrong I was a dark hairy dog like me still has two scars on his leg!

That said in reality I've never found it too much of a problem. They seem worse early morning and late evening . Avoid Loch side walks at these times and you should be ok. Just ask the wardens. They get to know these little Bu$$erS very well.

Three times I've been DD and I wish it had worked for me. Sadly it didn't and eventually when the buggers couldn't find anywhere left to bite I had bites on the bites

I've still got the purple blotch scars on my arms from some of the bites. In the three trips Her Ladyship never received one bite. I told her they don't go for bad meat.
Each night I got so paranoid I'd go around the inside of the van with a torch looking for them. They were easier to spot with a torch because their shadow made them look twice as big
smiley-laughing.gif

It was here that I got my retribution by squashing them and I got great satisfaction in putting to death those who squashed red because I knew that was my blood and they had already bitten me

Payback time.
The only problem was by the time we'd got home the ceiling of the caravan was a mess of squashed midges, hundreds of them.
Compared to the site at Clachan, Killin, the Bunree site is heaven. At Clachan, because of the boggy conditions and being in a wood the little ******** are out in clouds all day long.

I've been most years since 1974 and can say the real worst place in august was Castle Sween campsite on Loch Sween Argyll. The Campbelltown peninsula. Since then we have avoided June July August as best we can.
Strangely enough when I smoked the buggers never touched me. Maybe there's something in the nicotine they hate?? In the caravan we use the plug into the electric socket bug defender. The thing you take abroad. That seems to work well too.
