Could some one please advise me on a suitable twin axel caravan ?? as a complete novce I don't now where to start. I have been looking on ebay and the classifieds, and geting cross eyed.

My wife and I have two golden retrievers that take up quite a bit of space, so a large caravan would be ideal,I have a Land Rover Defender 110, so size doesn't matter.

Some of the larger vans apear to represent good value for money ie, LMC, Tabbert and Hobby,is there a restriction on lenth and width???

As long as it has a toilet, shower and end bed, this has been set in stone by the wife.

I also plan to join the caravan club.

best thing to do is to have a look round the dealers and see the vans first hand.twin wheelers a vey difficult to manouvre manually.the car you have is a good tow car 1954kg kerb and 150 kgs nose so should be ok with almost anything.

The maximum dimensions of a trailer that can be towed by a car or light commercial vehicle in the UK (neither of which may have a maximum allowable weight over 3500kg) are fixed by law at 7m long (excluding the drawbar) and 2.3m wide (including any fixed body parts such as mudguards). Note that this restriction applies to caravans towed by all types of vehicle within this weight limit, including 4x4s and light trucks, so those 2.5m-wide German caravans you see being towed by Transit-type vans or 4x4s are almost certainly illegal.

Sorry about this - but...could I suggest that you didn't bother with a twin. That is unless you've towed before. There's loads of single axles around. Your choice is limited by the size of your wallet. The more you pay the more you get. If you must go for a twin then a Conqueror varient is good. Bye-the-bye I've got a Rallye 635 (a twin) on order double standards or what -:) !!!!!!!!

Hi Ian, I tow a twin axle Lunar Lexon 640 behind a diesel Toyota Surf 3.0 L no problem. We like the van because it has an island or walk around bed in a seperate bedroom. This measn you do not have to climb over one another to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night and the bed is a lot easier to make up. The German vans are good value for money but try and get one with an island bed. Next time round it is German for us.

I had looked at a Surff 3.0L Import, but was warned off by a friend that bought one. It cost him an arm and a leg to fix !! I still fancy one....Has yours been OK Ian ?? The wife doesn't like driving my Defender 110, I had thought of useing her car for towing, a Passat 130 Tdi Sport Estate, but it's very close to the ground. I think this could be a problem as we live down a bumpy gravel track that is shared with our neighbour farmer.

I would highly recommend the Surf for value for money but ensure it is the 3.0 litre model. The 2.4 is known to have cylinder head problems.

If possible get one that has just been imported ( ie. you are the first UK owner ) and ensure that the cam belt has been renewed.

Avoid any that have been modified or off-roaded in the UK, the lads seem to like changing the suspension and jacking up the bodies.

See www.fourtrackcars.com ,I have no connection other than being a satisfied customer.

Ian

We bought a Lunar Quasar 615 early this year which I towed home from the dealer 200 miles with a V6 Freelander have taken it away one weekend and it was great. Have now changed the V6 to a TD4 Auto so will be interested to feel the comparision. Also I have a Classic Range Rover which is a passion of mine which will at some time to the Van. Your 110 will have no problems with any caravan you opt for the towing limit for this vehicle is the same for the Range Rover which is 3500KG. Look Chose Buy and Enjoy.
